Walmart Broccoli Recalled for Listeria Food Poisoning Risk
In December 2024, Walmart and its supplier Braga Fresh announced a recall for certain 12-oz. bags of Marketside® Broccoli Florets due to a risk of food poisoning.
The product is past its shelf-life and should no longer be in stores, but some people may have put it in their freezers to use at a later date.
What is the Risk?
People who eat this product could be infected with Listeria monocytogenes, which is a type of bacteria that can survive on refrigerated and/or frozen foods.
Infections with Listeria can be serious and sometimes deadly, especially for people who are elderly, people and with vulnerable immune systems, pregnant women and infants.
What Happened?
Health officials in Texas tested a bag of Marketside Broccoli from a Walmart in Texas and it contained Listeria monocytogenes.
The contamination was “discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” according to the recall.
Did Anyone Get Sick?
No illnesses were reported at the time the recall for Walmart broccoli was announced in December 2024, but people still could get sick if they froze the broccoli for later use and ate it without fully cooking it. Listeria can survive on frozen food, but it is destroyed if food is cooked thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) or more.
