Did Gilead Delay Safer Drugs?

Gilead Sciences sold Viread and similar anti-viral medications for years before releasing a newer anti-viral drugs with a safer version of TDF, called Tenofovir Alafenamide or TAF. Unfortunately, by the time TAF was released, many patients who took the older drugs had developed severe side effects in their bones, teeth, and kidneys.

Viread Class Action Lawsuit Filed in California

In May 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of people from California with HIV who developed bone and kidney side effects after taking Gilead’s older drugs with TDF instead of TAF.

The class action lawsuit accuses Gilead of misrepresenting the safety and effectiveness of TDF. The class action was filed on behalf of everyone in California who used “Viread, Truvada, or Atripla from October 26, 2001, through the present, who were personally or whose physician was exposed to Gilead’s misrepresentations.”

HIV Drug Lawsuits Filed Against Gilead Sciences

A personal injury lawsuit was also filed by 2 men from California living with HIV who suffered bone and kidney damage as a result of taking Gilead’s TDF. Their lawyers claim that Gilead knew as far back as 2001 that TSF was ‘…highly toxic in the doses prescribed and risked permanent and possibly fatal damage to the kidneys and bones.’ Furthermore, they claim that Gilead kept a safer drug in its laboratory to maximize their profits on the older anti-HIV drugs.
