What is Vimovo?

Vimovo is an anti-arthritis medication that contains an anti-inflammatory drug (naproxen) with an antacid (esomeprazole). One common side effect of naproxen is stomach ulcers, and the antacid helps prevent ulcers by reducing stomach acid.

Vimovo and Kidney Failure

Vimovo contains esomeprazole (Nexium), which belongs to the proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) class of heartburn drugs. No one knows why these drugs are associated with kidney problems, but low magnesium is associated with kidney problems. Over time, repeated bouts of kidney inflammation (nephritis) could also cause renal disease.

In December 2014, the FDA updated the labelon all PPIs, including Vimovo, with new warnings about acute interstitial nephritis. This side effect occurs when an allergic reaction causes sudden inflammation and swelling in the kidneys.

In the last two decades, dozens of case reports have linked PPIs and kidney disease. In recent years, two studies have found more evidence of an increased risk:

• One study published by Canadian researchers found a 3-fold increased risk of nephritis and a 2.4-fold increased risk of acute kidney injury associated with PPIs.
• In February 2016, another study found that people who used PPIs every day were 20-50% more likely to be diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease.
