Valsartan Recall Lawsuits Centralized in New Jersey

February 2019 — Federal judges have chosen the U.S. District Court for New Jersey under Judge Robert B. Kugler to centralize all injury lawsuits from people who took generic Valsartan medications before developing cancer, liver damage, or other injuries.

Valsartan Lawsuits

Lawsuits have been filed by people who took generic Valsartan medications that were recalled due to a toxic impurity. The impurities — called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) or NDEA — are known to cause cancer and liver damage. Drug-makers such as Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Company of China were allegedly aware of the impurity in 2012.

Valsartan Blood Pressure Drugs Contaminated with Carcinogens

Valsartan is a generic blood-pressure medication that was originally sold in 1996 under the brand-name Diovan®. In mid-2018, investigators determined that certain Valsartan drugs were contaminated with NDMA, a toxic impurity that was left over from industrial drug-making processes.

Valsartan Recalls

The first recalls for Valsartan were announced by the European Medicines Agency in July 2018. A few days later, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued similar recalls.
