What is the problem?

Serious birth defects occurred in babies born to women who used the anti-HIV medication dolutegravir early in pregnancy or just before becoming pregnant in an ongoing study in Botswana.

Dolutegravir is an ingredient in Triumeq, Tivicay, and Juluca.

Triumeq Birth Defects

Triumeq has been linked to spina bifida and other neural tube defects in the brain, spine, and spinal cord. They occur in the first month of fetal development when the spinal column fails to close, allowing amniotic fluid in the womb to cause permanent nerve damage.

What is Triumeq?

Triumeq® is an anti-HIV medication that combines dolutegravir, abacavir, and lamivudine in a single pill once a day. Triumeq works by blocking a chemical in your body that HIV needs to multiply, which can help lower the amount of HIV in the bloodstream.

Triumeq is manufactured by Viiv Healthcare and GlaxoSmithKline. It was approved by the FDA in the U.S. in August 2014.

FDA Warning for Triumeq Birth Defects

In May 2018, the FDA warned about a study linking Triumeq and birth defects in a Safety Communication.

The FDA recommended that women of childbearing age should either switch to a non-dolutegravir HIV medication or use birth control to prevent pregnancy. They also recommended that pregnant women should switch to another HIV medication to avoid birth defects.

“Neural tube defects happen early in pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant. For this reason, women of childbearing age should talk to their health care professional about other non-dolutegravir-containing antiretroviral medicines.”

Neural Tube Birth Defects

Neural tube birth defects occur when the spinal cord fails to close completely during the first 4 weeks of fetal development. Amniotic fluid in the womb causes nerve damage to the spinal cord, which often results in birth defects such as spina bifida, paralysis, underdevelopment of the brain, or death of the baby.

Types of Neural Tube Birth Defects

  • Spina bifida
  • Meningocele
  • Myelomeningocele
  • Anencephaly
  • Encephalocele
  • Iniencephaly
