Thermos Recalls 8.2 Million Food Jars and Bottles After Vision Loss Reports
In April 2026, Thermos L.L.C. recalled approximately 8.2 million food containers in cooperation with the CPSC. The recall covers about 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars in models SK3000 (16-oz.) and SK3020 (24-oz.) that were manufactured before July 2023. The recall also includes about 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles (40-oz.) with SK3010.
The CPSC confirmed 27 reports of consumers struck by a stopper that forcefully ejected when the container was opened, including injuries requiring medical attention. Three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after the stopper struck them in the eye.
Thermos describes the defect on its own recall page as follows:
“If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer.”
What Is the Hazard?
The stoppers on the recalled food jars and bottles do not have a pressure relief valve in the center. When perishable food or beverages are stored inside and left sealed for an extended period, pressure can build as contents ferment or off-gas. When the container is opened, that pressure has no controlled way to escape. It can launch the stopper with enough force to cause serious eye and facial injuries.
The injuries documented in this recall are not minor. Three people have lost their vision permanently. Additional consumers have required medical attention for impact and laceration injuries.
Which Products Are Affected?
- SK3000 — 16-oz. Thermos Stainless King Food Jar, manufactured before July 2023
- SK3020 — 24-oz. Thermos Stainless King Food Jar, manufactured before July 2023
- SK3010 — 40-oz. Thermos Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottle, all units
- Available in a variety of colors; the Thermos trademark appears on the side and the model number is printed on the bottom
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled containers were sold at Target, Walmart, and other stores nationwide, as well as online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, and Thermos.com from approximately March 2008 through July 2024 for about $30.
With more than 16 years of sales at major Texas retailers, including Walmart and Target locations across Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and Fort Worth, it is likely that thousands of unsuspecting consumers are in possession of these products.
The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the recalled products immediately. Consumers can contact Thermos at support.thermos.com or by calling 662-563-6822 to register for a free replacement stopper (SK3000 and SK3020) or a replacement bottle (SK3010). Do not return the product to the store.
How Many People in Texas Were Affected?
Official CPSC reports typically represent only a fraction of actual incidents. Many consumers who were struck by an ejecting stopper may never have reported the injury to Thermos or to federal regulators. If you believe this product injured you or a family member, our lawyers may be able to help.
Legal Help for Texans Injured by the Thermos Recall
A product that launches a hard stopper with enough force to permanently blind a person is not an acceptable consumer risk. These food jars and bottles were sold for $30 at some of the most widely visited retail stores in Texas, marketed for everyday use by families, including parents packing lunches for children.
Texas consumers who were injured by a recalled Thermos food jar or bottle may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. Permanent vision loss is a life-altering injury that goes far beyond the cost of a replacement stopper. A Texas product liability lawyer can help you understand whether you have a claim.
