What is Botulism?
Botulism is a rare but serious type of food poisoning. Although rare, botulism can be caused by commercially-produced foods that are improperly sterilized, canned, preserved, or fermented.
Botulism is caused by a powerful toxin that is produced by the bacteria C. botulinum. Foods that are contaminated with the botulinum toxin do not look or smell spoiled, but taking even a tiny sip can be deadly.
Symptoms of Botulism Usually Descend Down the Body
The symptoms of botulism usually start with muscle weakness in the face, eyes, or mouth that spread down the body to the legs. If the lungs become paralyzed, a person can rapidly suffer from breathing difficulties and death.
Warning Signs & Symptoms
- Difficulty swallowing
- Muscle weakness
- Double vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Blurry vision
- Slurred speech
- Difficulty breathing
- Difficulty moving the eyes
