The problem has “can result in overheating and, in some cases, smoke or flame and can cause death or serious injury due to fire and burn hazards,” according to the recall on November 13, 2025.

Was My Powerwall 2 Recalled?

The recalled Powerwall 2 systems were sold from November 2020 through December 2022 for about $8,000. They have the name “Powerwall 2” printed on a label on the side of the unit.

What is the Problem?

Tesla warned that certain Powerwall 2 systems contain a defective lithium-ion battery cells that were manufactured by an unnamed 3rd-party may cause the Powerwall 2 to overheat and catch on fire.

Tesla explained on the recall website:

“The affected subset of Powerwall 2 units may stop functioning normally, resulting in overheating, smoking and in some cases smoke or flame causing minor property damage.”

How Many Fires Were Reported?

Tesla said it received 22 reports of the Powerwall 2 overheating, including 6 incidents involving 5 smoking, and 5 fires that caused “minor property damage.” No injuries were reported.

Powerwall 2 Recalled in Australia in September 2025

In September 2025, safety officials in Australia also reported fires and overheating incidents with the Tesla Powerwall 2.

The recall in Australia included “reports of Powerwall 2 units with the affected battery cells smoking or emitting flames, resulting in minor property damage,” according to the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission.

What is the Tesla Powerwall 2?

Tesla manufactures the Powerwall 2, a home-energy storage system that uses rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The Powerwall 2 is usually installed along with solar panels. The system is designed to store excess solar power, which can be used to provide electricity to a home or electric vehicle (EV) when the sun is not shining.

What Should I Do?

Homeowners should be aware of the risk of significant property damage, severe injury or death from a defective Powerwall 2 system.

Due to the seriousness of the problem, Tesla has remotely discharged the energy from all affected Powerwall 2 systems, draining the battery down to 0%, which hopefully will reduce the fire hazard.

Owners can check the Tesla app, which will read: “Powerwall Disabled: Your Powerwall will be replaced.” Tesla or a Certified Installer will reach out to customers via phone or email to schedule a free removal of the Powerwall 2, and installation of a free Powerwall 3.
