What is Tepezza?

Tepezza (generic: teprotumumab) is the first-ever treatment for thyroid eye disease, which is a condition that causes bulging eyes. It was developed by Horizon Therapeutics and approved in the U.S. in January 2020.

How Does It Work?

Tepezza is an intravenous (IV) medicine that is delivered through a needle that is placed in a patient’s arm. Tepezza is given as an IV infusion every 3 weeks, for a total of 8 infusions.

Tepezza and Hearing Loss

Unfortunately, there are reports of patients who suffered from hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or permanent deafness after receiving IV infusions of Tepezza. In some reports, hearing loss occurred after just a few infusions of Tepezza, and did not improve.

What is the Problem?

Lawsuits accuse Horizon Therapeutics of downplaying the risk of hearing loss from Tepezza. In clinical trials, around 10% of patients on Tepezza reported hearing loss, according to the Prescribing Information for Tepezza.

The problem is that recent studies have found that the actual risk of hearing loss from Tepezza could be 65% of patietns, according to a study by The Endocrine Society.

What Causes Hearing Loss?

Tepezza is linked to a specific type of drug-induced hearing loss that is called sensorineural hearing loss.

This side effect can occur when Tepezza damages hair cells or other delicate structures that are located deep inside the inner ear.

These hair cells are responsible for growing tiny hairs that vibrate when they are hit by sound waves. They also transmit sound vibrations into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the brain.

Many medications are known to have toxic side effects on hearing. These “ototoxic medications” include certain antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, NSAID painkillers like ibuprofen, and possibly Tepezza.

How Long Does It Take For Hearing Loss to Occur?

Tepezza patients may experience hearing loss at any time during or after treatment. The onset of symptoms may be gradual or sudden, and patients may lose hearing in one ear or both ears.

Is My Hearing Loss Permanent?

Hearing problems might improve when a patient stops taking Tepezza, but not always. There are reports of patients who experienced hearing loss or deafness for months or years after discontinuing Tepezza.

In June 2023, dozens of Tepezza hearing loss lawsuits nationwide were centralized in a single federal courtroom, under one judge. In the future, judges will select certain cases for trials that will help lawyers negotiate a settlement or other resolution for other Tepezza lawsuits.
