Walmart Recalls Swagtron E-Scooters for Fire Hazard

In February 2025, Walmart recalled about 17,970 Swagtron electric scooters (“e-scooters”) because the battery can catch on fire, which poses a serious risk of injuries and deaths.

What Should I Do?

Safety officials are warning people to immediately stop using and charging these Swagtron e-scooters, cut the throttle cord, and dispose of them according to your local hazardous waste disposal laws.

What is the Problem?

The recalled Swagtron e-scooters have a defective lithium-ion battery. This battery can overheat, explode, catch on fire, smoke, melt, and ignite.

There is a risk of life-threatening or deadly fires, especially if an e-scooter fire occurs in a home, apartment, or residential building.

Swagtron E-Scooter Causes Major Apartment Fire

In November 2023, a Swagtron SG-5 E-Scooter was linked to a fire in apartment building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One person suffered a burn injury. The building was severely damaged in the fire, which displaced residents. Fortunately no one was killed or seriously injured.

How To Identify Recalled Swagtron E-Scooters

How to identify the recalled e-scooters:

  • SG-5 Swagger 5 Boost Commuter Electric Scooters
  • Powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery

139 Fires and Thermal Incidents Linked to Swagtron

At least 139 fires and “thermal incidents” are linked to Swagtron products, including e-scooters, hoverboards, and e-skateboards.

Safety officials are warning people to “consider these reports, the lack of information about compliance with voluntary safety standards, and the company’s failure to provide safety information.”

Swagtron Does Not Agree to Recall E-Scooters

The recall was NOT announced by Swagtron, the e-scooter based in Fort Bend, Indiana. This is why Swagtron is not offering a refund.

Swagtron “has not been responsive” to requests for a recall or more information about the safety of its products, according to a warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Can I Get a Refund?

Full refunds are available to Walmart and Sam’s club customers. Walmart will send an email with more information on how to get a refund to all known customers.

Swagtron e-scooters were sold at Tractor Supply, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s Club and online at SWAGTRON.com, Amazon.com, eBay.com, Walmart.com, BestBuy.com, SamsClub.com and TractorSupply.com since 2019.
