Medtronic issued a Class I recall for StrataMR valves after dozens of complaints and one death was reported. Incorrectly adjusted valves can cause under-drainage of cerebrospinal fluid, coma, and death.

StrataMR Valve Recalled for Brain Fluid Drainage Problems
Medtronic Neurosurgery issued an Urgent Field Safety Notice (PDF) to warn customers about the problem in February 2017. StrataMR valves can be adjusted to an incorrect position that causes flow-resistance problems and under-drainage of cerebrospinal fluid from the brain.
The valves were sold after October 2015. The recall involves model numbers 42955, 42965, 45905, 46955, 46960, 46965, and 46970.
Number of Injuries & Deaths Reported
Medtronic reported one death and a complaint-rate of 2.75% out of 2,622 total units in distribution worldwide (approximately 72 complaints). It is unknown if the death was caused by a malfunctioning StrataMR valve.
What are StrataMR Valves?
StrataMR valves are surgically implanted in the skull of people with hydrocephalus, or “water on the brain,” a congenital condition that causes excess cerebrospinal fluid to accumulate in the skull. Left untreated, hydrocephalus causes skull swelling and brain damage.
Do Patients Need Another Surgery?
Medtronic is not recommending routine surgery to replace the defective valves. Instead, they are asking patients to be vigilant for symptoms of hydrocephalus that will occur if the valve is not working. The symptoms of a malfunctioning valve include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Lethargy
- Coma
- Death
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not filing a StrataMR valve class action. Instead, we file individual lawsuits for people who were injured by a recalled valve.
About Class Actions
Class action lawsuits have advantages for large groups of people with very similar legal claims. Instead of everyone filing a lawsuit alone, members of a class action join together and seek compensation.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Class actions can have disadvantages for individual members who have far more serious injuries than everyone else. Any payout must be divided with everyone in the class action. Members may also have to accept “low-ball” settlements or higher attorneys’ fees.
This is why our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits for people who were injured by defective StrataMR valves, rather than a class action. We specialize in holding manufacturers accountable to selling defective medical devices and failing to warn about safety risks.
