October 6, 2015 — Texas Star Nut and Food Co. has issued a recall for macadamia nuts that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled products were sold from June 20 to September 9, 2015 to stores in Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. Salmonella contamination was discovered during routine sampling by the FDA.
Recall macadamia nut products include:
- Nature’s Eats Natural Macadamia Nuts 6oz. – Lot Codes: 35897001; 36157001; 37777001 – Best By Dates: 3/6/2016; 3/12/2016; 7/14/2016.
- Southern Grove Simply Raw Trail Mix 8oz. – Lot Codes: 36242004; 37534004; 37409004; 38177004 – Best By Dates: 3/13/2016; 6/26/2016; 7/15/2016; 8/17/2016.
This is at least the third Salmonella recall for Texas Star and just the latest in a rash of recalls involving macadamia nuts. On March 20, Texas Star also recalled Nature’s Eats Natural Macadamia Nuts after random sampling detected Salmonella. Another recall was issued on April 7.
In the last few months, macadamia nut recalls have also been issued by Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, Rocky Mountain Foods, Sincerely Nuts, Jansal Valley, Mahina Mele Farm, and more.
No illnesses have been reported. However, the FDA warns that Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults, and others with weak immune systems:
“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
