Spring & Mulberry Expands Chocolate Recall in May 2026

In May 2026, Spring & Mulberry voluntarily expanded a previously announced recall of select dark chocolate bars due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

The expanded recall follows a root cause investigation conducted by Spring & Mulberry’s manufacturing partners in coordination with food safety experts and the FDA. Investigators identified a single lot of date ingredients as the most likely source of contamination.

According to the company, all chocolate bars included in the expanded recall tested negative for Salmonella, and no confirmed illnesses have been reported to date. The company says the expansion followed a separate recall by its ingredient supplier.

What Is the Salmonella Risk?

According to the FDA, Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience the following symptoms within 6 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea (which may be bloody)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

In rare cases, a Salmonella infection can lead to more severe complications, including bloodstream infections, arterial infections, endocarditis, and reactive arthritis.

Which Chocolate Bars Are Affected?

The expanded recall covers 12 flavors of Spring & Mulberry date-sweetened dark chocolate bars. The lot code is printed on the back of the packaging and on the inner flow wrap.

  • Blood Orange (Orange box)
  • Coffee (Light Brown box)
  • Earl Grey (Purple box)
  • Lavender Rose (Light Blue box)
  • Mango Chili (Orange box)
  • Mint Leaf (Green box)
  • Mixed Berry (Purple box)
  • Mulberry Fennel (Burgundy box)
  • Pecan Date (Yellow box)
  • Pure Dark (Navy Blue box)
  • Pure Dark Mini (Navy Blue box)
  • Sea Salt (Grey box)

The full list of recalled lot and batch codes is available on Spring & Mulberry’s recall page and on the FDA notice.

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled chocolate bars were sold online and through retail partners nationwide since August 2025. Spring & Mulberry distributes through specialty grocers and natural food retailers across Texas, including locations in Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Fort Worth.

If you have any of the affected bars at home, Spring & Mulberry is urging consumers not to eat them and to dispose of them. To request a refund, the company is asking customers to email a photo of the product packaging showing the batch code to recalls@springandmulberry.com.

How Many People Got Sick?

No confirmed illnesses have been linked to Spring & Mulberry chocolate bars to date. However, the CDC has long noted that Salmonella infections are widely underr-eported, since many people who get sick never seek medical care or are not tested.

With 12 flavors distributed nationwide for nearly a year, the actual number of Texans exposed to the recalled chocolate could be higher than what has been officially confirmed. If you believe a recalled Spring & Mulberry chocolate bar made you or a family member sick, our lawyers may be able to help.

Original Spring & Mulberry Chocolate Recall

The original recall was announced on January 12, 2026, after a third-party laboratory reported that a finished bar of Spring & Mulberry Mint Leaf chocolate tested positive for Salmonella.

On January 14, 2026, Spring & Mulberry voluntarily expanded the recall to include additional flavors made during the same time period on the same equipment. The May 2026 expansion is the second time the company has broadened the recall after further investigation.

The repeated expansions reflect the difficulty of containing Salmonella contamination once it enters the supply chain — and underscore the risk to consumers who may have purchased bars over many months without realizing the lot they bought was affected.

Why Is Chocolate Linked to Salmonella?

Chocolate has been linked to Salmonella outbreaks for decades. The low water content and high fat content of chocolate allow Salmonella to survive at temperatures that would normally kill it. Studies have shown Salmonella can persist in chocolate for more than a year.

Combined with the very small amount of Salmonella needed to cause infection, these properties make chocolate an unusually high-risk food when contamination occurs anywhere in the manufacturing or ingredient supply chain.

Spring & Mulberry chocolate is sold widely across Texas through online channels and at specialty natural food retailers. Many families purchase these bars believing they are buying a premium, carefully sourced product.

When a manufacturer’s ingredient supply chain is compromised by Salmonella, the consequences can be severe, especially for young children, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems.
