3M Scotch Thermal Laminator Recall
In December 2022, 3M recalled about 516,500 Scotch™ Thermal Laminators because they can overheat and catch on fire.
9 Fires Linked to Recalled Scotch Laminators
3M reported 9 fires when the recalled Scotch Thermal Laminators overheated, including 3 fires that caused property damage. There were no reports of injuries or burns.
What is the Problem?
3M blamed the laminator fires and overheating issues on a safety feature that fails to shut off the laminator when it gets too hot.
The Canadian recall notice explains that a “safety feature may not operate correctly to turn off power if the product enters an overheating state due to a thermal malfunction.”
Was My Laminator Recalled?
The recall involves the Scotch™ Thermal Laminator (Model TL1302 printed on a sticker on the bottom).
The laminator is light gray/white with gray accents. The word “Scotch” is printed in gray on the front of the device. The laminating slot is approximately 13 inches wide.
They were sold at Walmart, Costco, Staples, other stores nationwide, and online from April 2014 through October 2022.

What is a Thermal Laminator?
Thermal laminators are machines that use heat to seal a protective layer of plastic onto paper, card stock, or other materials.
Laminators are used to preserve important documents and make craft projects. Teachers also commonly use laminators to make flash cards, signs, name tags, wipe-off worksheets, and other reusable learning materials.
