Savage Cat Food Recalled for Bird Flu (H5N1) Risk

In March 2025, Savage Pet Food, a raw pet food company located in El Cajon, California, recalled boxes of Savage Cat Food (Chicken) due to reports of bird flu (H5N1) illnesses in cats who ate the food.

What Happened?

In February 2025, Savage Pet was made aware of a cat in Colorado who contracted H5N1, got sick and recovered. Laboratory tests on a sealed packet of Savage Cat Food were “non-negative.” Further test results confirmed the virus to be negative.

Two Cat Deaths Reported in New York

In March 2025, Savage Pet was made aware of another case of H5N1 in a kitten in New York who died after feeding on lot 11152026 of Savage Cat Food (Chicken). Tragically, the kitten died. Another cat also died after being exposed to the kitten, but it did not eat the food.

Savage Cat Food to 3 Bird Flu Illnesses in New York

On March 15, 2025, the New York City Health Department issued a warning to New Yorkers against feeding pets raw food or raw milk due to avian flu.

Health officials warned against using Savage Cat Food after 3 cats developed Bird Flu (H5N1) illnesses, including 2 cats who died:

“Today, the New York City Health Department (NYC Health Department) is advising New Yorkers to not feed their pets food from the raw pet food company Savage Cat Food. Avian influenza (bird flu) virus was detected in two cats and a suspected third cat over the past two months, all connected to Savage Cat Food, poultry packets lot number 11152026.”

How To Identify Recalled Cat Food

The recall involves large boxes (84-oz.) and small boxes (21-oz.) of Savage Cat Food (Raw Chicken) with lot code/best by date 11152026. This product was distributed nationwide in November 2024.

The boxes are cardboard and contain individual plastic packets inside. Each packet has the lot code/best by date stamped on the bottom.

Did Any People Get Sick?

No human illnesses were reported, but people could be infected with Bird Flu (H5N1) if they are exposed to the virus in pets or raw food.

People can be infected if live H5N1 virus gets into their eyes, nose, or mouth. People should wash their hands while handling raw products and sanitize contact surfaces.

People who handled the recalled products should watch for symptoms of bird flu, including:

  • Eye redness or irritation (conjunctivitis)
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny/stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Muscle/body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures
  • Rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea, and/or vomiting
