What Are Infrared Sauna Blankets?

Infrared sauna blankets look like sleeping bags. The fabric of the bag is sewn with a network of electric heating elements that emit infrared rays. A person uses a controller to set the temperature and the time, with many products advertised to reach 175ºF — or even higher.

What is the Problem?

Infrared sauna blankets are advertised for a wide range of purported health benefits, with little evidence to back up these claims. Products may be advertised for better circulation, detoxification, relaxation, improved sleep, better skin, boosting metabolism, burning fat and calories, muscle soreness, or a faster recovery after workouts.

Types of Infrared Sauna Blankets

Infrared sauna blankets, wraps, and mats have been sold in the U.S. under a variety of brand-names, for example:

  • Lifepro Infrared Sauna Blanket
  • Heat Healer
  • HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket
  • Current Body Wellness
  • Bon Charge
  • Tzumi
  • And more

Burn Hazards of Sauna Blankets

Infrared sauna blankets are advertised to reach temperatures of 175ºF or more, which may be hot enough to cause burn injuries for some people.

There is also a serious safety hazard if the sauna blanket malfunctions and exceeds this temperature, with a person trapped inside. They may be unable to escape the product quickly enough before the blanket gets too hot and causes severe burn injuries.
