Listeria Food Poisoning

Listeria infections can take up to 70 days to cause food poisoning symptoms. Not everyone has symptoms, but they may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Listeria infections are rare, but they can be deadly. They spread from the intestines to the bloodstream in 5-10% of cases, often resulting in life-threatening sepsis or meningitis (brain inflammation). Pregnant women also have a high risk of miscarriage or stillbirth.

Salvadorean Cheese Recalled for Listeria Risk

In January 2020, Limeño LLC of Florida recalled Salvadorean String Cheese after it tested positive for Listeria. It is also called “Quesillo Salvadoreño Para Pupusa.” The product is a semi-soft cheese for making pupusas, a popular food from El Salvador.

Vulto Cheese Recall

In March 2017, an outbreak of Listeria in raw milk cheese sickened 6 people, including a newborn baby and 2 people who died. In response, Vulto Creamery recalled all raw milk cheese. The cheese was also recalled by Whole Foods.

Cheese Tests Positive for Listeria

In February 2017, Tennessee Department of Agriculture reported finding Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of Amish Classic Colby deli cheese that was randomly collected from a store in Trenton, TN on January 30.

The cheese that tested positive for Listeria was made by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC in November 2016, but it was cut and wrapped by MDS Foods in Tennessee. When these 3rd-party cheese suppliers issued recalls, it set off a chain-reaction of recalls from all of their customers.

Deutsch Käse Haus was warned about Listeria monocytogenes after FDA inspections in 2009 found that 12% of surface swabs (3 out of 25) tested positive. Unlike most bacteria, Listeria grows in cold temperatures and it thrives in refrigerators and deli counters.

Sargento Cheese Recall

On February 10, Sargento Foods Inc. issued a recall for Longhorn Colby cheese that was supplied by Deutsch Kase Haus due to potential Listeria contamination.

On February 17, Sargento expanded the recall to include more products from the same supplier that were packaged on the same line. Sargento also said it cut ties to the supplier. The following is a complete list of Sargento’s recalled cheese.

Meijer Cheese Recall

On February 10, Meijer issued a recall for Meijer Colby Cheese and Colby Jack Cheese due to possible contamination with Listeria. The products were sold at the deli counter in Meijer stores between November 10, 2016 and February 9, 2017.

Meijer Muenster & Ham Sandwich Recall

On March 3, Meijer expanded their cheese recall to include store-brand Muenster cheese and pre-made ham sandwiches due to the potential risk of cross-contamination with Listeria. The recall includes the following products:

• Meijer Artisan Made Natural Muenster Cheese: The products were sold on “cheese islands” near the deli counter — Expiration Dates: March 28, May 13, and June 10, 2017.
• Meijer Ham Sub on Artisan White Baguette: They were sold in “grab-and-go” fresh deli cases — Sell-By Dates from November 2, 2016 through December 30, 2016.

Sara Lee Cheese Recall

On February 11, Sara Lee issued a recall for deli-sliced Monterey Jack and Colby Jack cheese sold in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Texas:

Taylor Farms Chicken Salad Recall

On February 11, Taylor Farms issued a recall for 6,330 pounds of chicken salad and pork salad products that may be contaminated with Listeria.

The deli salads were sold under the Signature Cafe and H-E-B brands and made with Pepperjack cheese that was recalled by Sargento:

• Signature Cafe Southwest Chicken Premade Salad, 10.5 oz. plastic trays with the following “USE BY” dates: “2/13/17, 2/14/17 or 2/15/17.”
• Signature Café Southwest Style Salad with Chicken, 10.5 oz. plastic trays with the following “USE BY” dates: “2/14/17, 2/15/17 or 2/16/17.”
• H-E-B Shake Rattle & Bowl Rowdy Ranch Hand (contains pork), 8.25 oz. plastic trays with the following “USE BY” dates: “2/17/17, 2/18/17 or 2/19/17.”

MDS Foods Cheese Recall

On February 11, MDS Foods Inc. issued a recall for multiple cheese products with confirmed Listeria contamination, and others that could potentially be contaminated.

The brands include Amish Classics, Meijer, Deli Readi, Deli Made EZ, Lipari Old Tyme, Duck Deli, and OldTyme.

On Febraury 17, MDS Foods Inc. expanded their cheese recall to include more products that were supplied by Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC. The products are potentially contaminated with Listeria because they were packaged on the same production lines in MDS facility in Tullahoma, TN as the affected product.

Guggisberg Cheese Recall

On February 14, Guggisberg Cheese Inc. issued a recall for cheese that was only sold at deli counters, due to a risk of Listeria. The recalled Colby cheese was manufactured between September 1, 2016 and January 27, 2017 and sold in the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, and West Virginia.

On February 16, a recall was issued by Biery Cheese Inc. for pre-packaged pre-sliced cheese sold under the Delallo, Dietz & Watson, and Private Selections brand-names. They were distributed in Georgia, Indiana, and Pennsylvania from November 11, 2016 to January 4, 2017:

Saputo Cheese Recall

On February 16, a recall was issued by Saputo Inc., the largest processor of dairy products in Canada, for two Gouda products that were sold to deli counters and grocery stores nationwide in the United States:

• Great Midwest® Applewood Smoked Gouda Cheese (~6 lb products, “Sell By” May 22, 2017)
• Dutchmark® Pasteurized Processed Smoked Gouda Cheese (~2 lb products, “Best if Used By” November 18, 2017)

Puro Picante Blazin’ Hot Chicken Salad Recall

On February 22, a recall was issued for 59,225 pounds of chicken salad made with cheese that could be contaminated with Listeria. The recalled product is 7.5-oz. single serve salad bowl packages of “Ready Pac Foods Puro Picante Blazin Hot” with Use-By Dates of 01/31/17 through 03/04/2017.

Bashas and Food City Cheese Recall

On February 24, a recall was issued for 9 types of Colby cheese sold in Arizona at Bashas’ and Food City supermarket meat/deli departments under the store-brand name.

PREMO Wrap Recall

On February 24, an alert was issued for three types of PREMO wraps made with cheese that could be contaminated with Listeria:

• Ham & Cheddar Wrap
• Tuscan Chicken Wrap
• Italian Wrap

A recall was not issued because the products are past their “Best by” dates of Feb. 12  and Feb. 14, 2017. They were sold in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

Yoke’s Cheese Recall

On February 28, Yoke’s Fresh Market grocery stores in Washington and Idaho recalled two types of 16-oz store-brand Colby Jack and Colby Longhorn cheese. The products were sold from September 1, 2016 through January 27, 2017.

Lipari Old Tyme Cheese Recall

On February 28, Lipari Old Tyme and Copperwood cheese was recalled due to a possible risk of Listeria. The cheese was sold in individual packages and also bulk sizes for slicing at the deli counter.

The products were sold in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

GFS Cheese Recall

On March 8, Biery Cheese Co. expanded an earlier recall to include “GFS Monterey Jack Cheese with Jalapeno Peppers” cheese that was supplied by Deutsch Kase Haus.

The products came in 1.5-pound plastic packages, UPC Code #093901777584, and had “Best-By” dated of July 19 and 20, 2017. They were sold at grocery stores between February 7-10, 2017 in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Vulto Cheese Recall – EXPANDED

On March 13, Vulto Creamery recalled all raw milk cheeses after a deadly outbreak of Listeria.

The CDC has reported 6 illnesses, including a newborn baby. Two people died in Connecticut and Vermont.

Illnesses were reported in Connecticut (1), Florida (1), New York (3), and Vermont (1).

Most of the cheese was sold in Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic States, California, Chicago, Portland (Maine) and Washington, DC. The recalled raw milk cheese products include:

Whole Foods Vulto Cheese Recall – EXPANDED

On March 13, Whole Foods expanded their recall in response to Vulto Creamery recalling all raw milk cheese.
