Samsung Washing Machines Recalled for Fire Hazard
In January 2023, Samsung announced a recall for 663,500 Top-Load Washing Machines with Super Speed Wash because they can overheat and catch on fire.
What is the Problem?
According to Samsung, there were 51 reports of “smoking, melting, overheating or fires,” including 3 reports of people who suffered smoke inhalation injuries. There were 10 reports of property damage.
The problem was linked to a short-circuit that causes overheating, which poses a fire hazard and a risk of burn injuries to consumers.
Where Were They Sold?
The recalled Samsung washing machines were sold nationwide in the U.S. from June 2021 through December 2022 at major retailers like Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, other stores and online.
Samsung Offers Free Software Update to Fix Fire Hazard
Samsung is asking consumers to immediately stop using the recalled washing machines until a free software update is installed.
Washing machines that are equipped with Wi-Fi and connected to the internet will automatically download the software update. If not, consumers should contact Samsung to get a free dongle that can be plugged into the washing machine to install the software update.

Samsung Settles Lawsuits After Recalling 2.8 Million Washing Machines
In October 2021, Samsung reached a major lawsuit settlement after recalling 2.8 million washing machines.
The washing machines were recalled in November 2016 because they can lose balance during the spin cycle and cause the top to violently blow off the chassis, causing serious injuries and/or property damage.
Severe Injuries and Property Damage Reported
When the recall was issued, some of the serious injuries reported included a broken jaw, injured shoulder, impact injuries, or fall-related injuries. In one report, a woman said her washing machine exploded so violently that it blew through a wall in her house.
The recall involved 34 models of top-load washing machines that were sold nationwide from March 2011 through November 2016 at stores like Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears and other retailers.
