Over 1 Million Samsung Ranges Recalled for Knobs Turning On Too Easily, Causing Fires

In August 2024, Samsung recalled more than 1.1 million Samsung Slide-In Electric Ranges that were sold since 2013 due to a fire hazard.

Where Were They Sold?

The ranges were sold nationwide at Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, other stores and online. Depending upon the model, the ranges were sold from May 2013 through August 2024.

What is the Problem?

The recalled Samsung Slide-In Electric Ranges have front-mounted knobs that can turn on too easily when they are accidentally bumped by people, children, or pets. More than 250 fires were reported.

250 Fires Linked to Knobs on Samsung Slide-In Electric Ranges

Samsung said it received more than 300 reports of the front-mounted knobs on the slide-in electric ranges being unintentionally activated.

In many accidents, people or pets hit the knobs and turned on the stove-burners, causing flammable objects on the stove to catch fire.

There were approximately 250 kitchen fires reported in the recall, including 18 fires that caused significant property damage. No human deaths were reported, but 7 fires resulted in pet deaths.

40 Injuries Linked to Samsung Range Fires When Knobs Accidentally Turned On

Samsung reported that at least 40 people were injured in incidents where the knobs unintentionally activated the burners on the stove.

Lawsuits Claim Samsung Has Known About Knob Dangers for Years

In November 2022, a class action lawsuit was filed against Samsung by lawyers who accuse the company of selling electric ranges with defective burner-control knobs.

The lawsuit claims that the knobs are defective because they must only travel a tiny distance to turn “ON” and activate the burners on the stove, which presents a dangerous safety hazard.

Lawyers claim that Samsung knew the knobs on their recalled electric ranges were “susceptible to unintentional activation” since at least 2014, when customers began complaining about the problem.

The class action was filed November 21, 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey — Case Number 2:22-cv-04132-CCC-CLW.
