Overview
The S7 and S7 Edge smartphones are Samsung’s Android flagship models for 2016. To power the 5.1-inch or 5.5-inch screen, it has a huge lithium ion battery of 3,000mAh vs. 2,550mAh on the Galaxy S6.
What is the problem?
On September 2, Samsung recalled 1 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after receiving 96 reports of the batteries overheating, resulting in 26 burn injuries and 55 reports of property damage. Click here to read more.
Unlike the Galaxy Note 7 recall, Samsung has no plans to issue a recall for the S7 or S7 Edge. The company said it will investigate reports of batteries exploding, but it believes explosions are very rare.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Lawsuit
Samsung has been hit with a lawsuit (PDF) over a Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone that exploded and caused severe burn injuries.
On May 30, Daniel Ramirez was at work on a construction site in Ohio with his S7 Edge in his pocket. He says it began “whistling, screeching, and vibrating,” emitting smoke, and burned his hand.
Then it “exploded without any warning,” resulting in 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns. He has permanent burn injuries on his groin, legs, and lower back. He required a skin graft surgery and physical therapy.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Explosion in Restaurant
In the UK, Sarah Crockett reports that her Galaxy S7 smartphone blew up in a busy cafe when it was not being charged. She told The Sun:
“It suddenly just expanded in my hand and got really, really hot. I dropped it on the table. Within a few seconds there was smoke everywhere and I jumped out of the way. The whole thing was just barbecued.”
Lithium Ion Battery Explosions
Lithium ion batteries were first developed in the 1970s. These rechargeable, long-lasting batteries pack a lot of power into a small size, which makes them ideal for smartphones, e-cigarettes, and cars.
The problem is that chemicals in the batteries are extremely flammable. If the battery is manufactured and used correctly, the risk is very low. But there are many ways the batteries can explode:
- Damage to the battery
- Over-charging
- Using incompatible chargers
- High heat
- Placing it in the pocket with metal coins or keys
- Faulty manufacturing
- And more
