Safyral VTE

A Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a life-threatening side effect of Safyral (drospirenone / ethinyl estradiol). The risk of blood clots is tied to drospirenone, the synthetic progestin in Safyral. Experts are now warning that drospirenone may triple the risk of blood clots compared to other progestins.

All progestin-containing birth control pills have a slight risk of VTE. With Safyral, because the risk of a blood clot is greater, the risk of a VTE is also greater. Women who smoke, are over 35, overweight, or diabetic have the highest risk. However, even women with no history of VTEs can suffer this deadly Safyral side effect.

What is a Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)?

A Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a series of events that begins with a blood clot, and a condition called Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). In DVT, blood clots form deep inside the body when there is no injury. The clots can grow to enormous size, causing major damage to the blood vessel and circulation in the lower leg. Clots that form in the thigh are most dangerous, with around 50% leading to the next stage of a VTE — a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). When a PE occurs, a blood clot obstructs a major blood vessel, causing severe circulation problems to the lungs. Lung tissue may be damaged. In severe cases, the heart is also affected. If the obstruction is large, the heart is forced to beat harder and faster to generate the exceptionally high blood pressure needed to force blood into the lungs. If the obstruction is large, the heart muscle may not be strong enough to accomplish this task. A Safyral VTE can cause heart failure, cardiac arrest, and death.

Signs & Symptoms of a Safyral VTE

The symptoms of a Safyral VTE may be severe, or benign. In fact, VTEs may have no symptoms in the early stages, before the blood clot causes a pulmonary embolism. Unfortunately, women who delay seeking medical treatment have the highest risk of death or disability.

When Safyral VTE does cause symptoms, these typically include:

  • Symptoms in the arms or legs: Pain, tenderness, swelling, discoloration of the skin (redness), warmth in the affected area, dilated veins, coolness in the fingers or toes, decreased circulation to the extremities
  • Sweating
  • Chest pain or discomfort, which may be just on one side of the body
  • Respiratory distress, rapid breathing, shortness of breath
  • Rapid pulse, “galloping” heart rhythm
  • Feeling weak, tired, or faint
  • Losing consciousness
  • Coughing, which may produce blood
  • Fever
  • Anxiety, feeling like something is very wrong

Treatment and Prognosis

Blood clots are under-diagnosed because the symptoms tend to be mild. Many doctors fail to realize that their patient has a blood clot, and the patient goes home and suffers a far more serious complication — a VTE. When a blood clot is diagnosed early, it can usually be effectively treated with intravenous clot-dissolving medications, which significantly reduce the chances that the blood clot will cause a pulmonary embolism or a VTE. If a VTE is occurring, a doctor’s first priority will be restoring circulation to the lungs. Surgery may be necessary to accomplish this, although less-invasive catheter techniques are becoming more common.

The prognosis varies widely depending on the severity of the VTE. While many people have no long-term complications, some have permanent disabilities or other health problems. One common complication of DVT in the legs is Post-Thrombotic Syndrome, which involves transient pain, numbness, tingling, itching, or other unusual sensations in the leg.
