Safyral is a birth control pill that contains drospirenone, which studies have linked to a three-fold increased risk of blood clots. When a blood clot gets stuck inside a coronary artery, it blocks the flow of blood to cardiac tissue, causing a Safyral heart attack. During this life-threatening medical emergency, the heart can become so severely damaged that it is unable to continue pumping blood to the body.

Overview
Safyral is an oral contraceptive invented by the drug company Bayer. It is basically Yasmin plus a folic acid vitamin. The “active” pills in Safyral contain the following combination of hormones and folate: 3-mg drospirenone (progestin), 0.03-mg ethinyl estradiol (estrogen), and 0.451-mg levomefolate calcium (folic acid B-vitamin).
Safyral is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when each pill is taken at the same time every day. However, researchers know that many women do not take birth control pills exactly as directed. For these women, the risk of pregnancy increases, and approximately 9 women per 100 get pregnant.
Because some women taking Safyral accidentally get pregnant, Safyral contains folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects. Researchers know that life-threatening neural tube birth defects (such as anencephaly or spina bifida) are more common when the mother is deficient in folate.
Safyral and Heart Attacks
A Safyral heart attack is one of the most life-threatening side effects of this birth control pill. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot obstructs the coronary arteries, thus blocking the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the cardiac tissue. Without oxygen, the heart muscle can become severely damaged or destroyed. This damage is permanent. The longer it takes to restore circulation to the cardiac tissue, the more tissue will be damaged.
Safyral has been linked to a three-fold increased risk of blood clots, which can cause a heart attack. Some risk factors increase the changes of a heart attack even more — being over 35 years of age, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol are some risk factors. Safyral heart attacks have occurred in some women with no risk factors. All women who take this medication have an increased risk of blood clots and heart attacks.
If a heart attack is severe, or if it is not treated early, it can cause heart failure. This life-threatening complication of a heart attack occurs when cardiac tissue is severely damaged, and it is unable to pump blood to the body. Other organ systems and tissues can become oxygen-deprived and damaged, leading to multiple organ system failure, permanent disability, or death.
Signs & Symptoms of a Safyral Heart Attack
Almost all hormonal birth control pills contain synthetic progestin, and experts know that taking progestin increases the risk of blood clots and heart attacks. Therefore, all women who take a hormonal birth control pill have an increased risk of a heart attack. It is a good idea to be aware of the early symptoms of a Safyral heart attack so you can seek treatment immediately.
The early symptoms of a heart attack may be relatively mild, resembling heartburn or indigestion. Some people delay seeking emergency medical treatment or calling 911 because they do not realize that they are having a heart attack. Delaying treatment can worsen the long-term prognosis, and reduces a person’s chance of survival.
Symptoms of a heart attack include:
- Chest pain or discomfort: Heart attack chest pain often begins mildly, and may resemble heartburn or indigestion. It may feel like squeezing, discomfort, fullness, tightness, pressure, or aching in the chest. This feeling may last several minutes, come and go, or be sudden and extremely painful.
- Body pain: Chest pain may radiate outward from the heart, affecting the shoulders, arms, teeth, jaw, back, or other areas of the upper body.
- Anxiety, nervousness: Many people report feeling an impending sense of doom, or feeling like something very serious is wrong with their health.
- Changes in consciousness: Dizziness, faintness, weakness, or feeling light-headed.
- Shortness of breath: The person may take deep breaths, gasp for air, or breathe very rapidly.
- Profuse sweating: This often occurs suddenly. The person’s skin may also be cool and clammy.
- Nausea, vomiting: Generally feeling and looking ill.
