Black Diamond Recalls Vision Climbing Harnesses
On March 13, 2025, Black Diamond announced a Safety Recall for about 1,580 Vision Climbing Harnesses due to a risk of serious injury or death.
What Happened?
No injuries or deaths were linked to BD Vision Climbing Harnesses, but there was 1 report of the waist belt failing. In this incident, Black Diamond said that it was a “heavily used product in which the waist belt failed in an atypical manner with no reported injuries or fatalities.”
What is the Problem?
Black Diamond blamed the Vision Climbing Harness problem on “premature degradation of its specialized materials and constructions.” They said “the root cause is still under investigation,” but decided to recall all Vision Climbing Harnesses “out of an abundance of caution.”
No further details about the incident were provided in the recall. In February 2025, there was an online report of a climber who fell 30-40 feet and shared photos of his Vision harness that ripped apart at the waist belt, with white fibers of the Vectran material clearly visible on the edges.
How To Identify Recalled Rock Climbing Harnesses
The recall involves all Black Diamond Vision Climbing Harnesses, which are ultra-lightweight harnesses for technical alpine and ice climbing. They are made with a unique material called Vectran.
They were sold from January 2018 through February 2025 at Liberty Mountain, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) and other specialty outdoor stores nationwide, and online websites for about $175.
What Should I Do?
Customers can visit the recall website for the Black Diamond Vision Climbing Harness at https://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/content/2025-vision-harness-recall/, where they can register to be sent a prepaid shipping label to send your harness back to Black Diamond.
The company is offering a full refund in the form of a credit card reimbursement, or alternatively, a $200 credit to be used at a Black Diamond store or website.
