There are over 200 reports of women who were sexually assaulted, raped, stalked, kidnapped, or harassed by their rideshare driver. In May 2017, a UC Riverside college student was raped by her Uber driver. Just days earlier, a Lyft driver raped a 14 year-old girl in Florida.

Uber Sexual Assault Lawsuit Settlements

In November 2016, Uber paid a settlement to resolve two unnamed women who were sexually assaulted by their drivers. One woman said a driver in South Carolina drove her the wrong way home, asked her to perform oral sex as “payment,” and then “viciously raped” her in August 2015. The other woman said a 38 year-old Uber driver forcibly kissed and groped her in February 2015.

Criminal Rideshare Driver Lawsuit

In January 2017, Uber was hit with another sexual assault lawsuit from a woman who was raped. Lawyers say her driver never should have been hired because he had a criminal history.

In August 2015, California’s district attorney said flaws in rideshare driver background checks allowed 25 men with criminal records — including murder, child abuse, and assault — to work in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

One of the drivers was a convicted murderer who spent 26 years in prison before he was paroled in 2008. In another case, a man who sexually abused a child under 14 years old was allowed to give “5,697 rides to Uber passengers, including unaccompanied children.”

$32 Million “Safe Rides” Class Action Settlement

In June 2017, Uber agreed to pay a $32.5 million class action lawsuit settlement for charging passengers a “Safe Rides” fee and advertising an industry-leading driver background-check. In reality, Uber used a private 3rd-party company to do the checks, which lawyers called “woefully inadequate.” Under terms of the settlement, Uber will be allowed to change the “Safe Rides” fee to “Booking Fee” in the app.
