What is the problem?

Redline contains hundreds of milligrams of caffeine per bottle, making it one of the most highly-caffeinated energy drinks on the market. It also contains a variety of other ingredients with stimulating effects, which have a synergistic effect that amplify the effects of caffeine.

According to recent lawsuits, some of the most potent ingredients include yohimbe, a stimulant that can cause hallucinations and panic attacks. Another controversial ingredient is vinpocetine, which has been linked to nausea, anxiety, and dry mouth.

Because Redline is marketed as a “dietary supplement,” it is not nearly as closely regulated as traditional beverages like Coca-Cola or Pepsi. This allows the makers of Redline to include high amounts of caffeine and other ingredients without requiring warnings or accurate labels.

How Much Caffeine is in Redline?

The original formula of Redline contains 250-mg of caffeine per 8-oz bottle. However, some formulations (Redline Xtreme, for example) contain upwards of 300-mg of caffeine. Other highly-caffeinated versions include VPX Redline, RTD, Redline Liquid Caps, Meltdown, and more. These products are marketed as stimulant fat-burners for bodybuilders.

What is the Risk?

Energy drinks pose serious risks, especially for children. In 2011, the journal Pediatrics has published a study in which researchers warned about side effects like seizures, diabetes, cardiac abnormalities, or mood and behavioral disorders or those who take certain medications

Caffeine Overdose

Overdoses of caffeine also pose serious risks for healthy adults. Moderate symptoms of caffeine toxicity typically begin after a healthy adult consumes 250-400 mg of caffeine. However, pregnant women and people with pre-existing heart problems can experience adverse events at much lower doses.

Redline Energy Drink Lawsuits

Vital Pharmaceuticals (also known as VPX Sports) settled a class action lawsuit involving Redline for $5.49 in March 2015. The two plaintiffs accused Vital of knowingly selling a dangerous product and failing to warn about potentially deadly risks.

The lawsuit was originally filed by Adam Mirabella, a man who claimed Redline was “unfit for human consumption.” According to the lawsuit, he claimed Redline causes chills, excessive sweating, vomiting, convulsions, chest pain, and rapid heartbeat.

Mirabella developed rapid heartbeat for 10 hours and was hospitalized after drinking Redline. He also experienced chest pain that was so severe he thought he was having a heart attack. Other symptoms included chest pain, loss of sensation in his hands, and extreme nausea.
