UPDATE: RadRunner E-Bike Batteries Can Catch Fire or Explode

In November 2025, safety officials warned consumers that Rad Power e-bike batteries can catch on fire or explode, which poses a risk of serious injuries or death. The warning includes RadRunner 1 and RadRunner 2 e-bike batteries.

The batteries may explode at any time (even when they are not charging, being used, or the batteries are in storage). This poses a serious risk of burn injuries and death. No injuries were reported, but there were 31 fires and $734,500 in property damage, according to the safety warning.

Rad Power Refused to Recall Batteries Despite Risk of Deadly Fires

Rad Power has refused to issue a recall, provide refunds to consumers, or replacement batteries. So the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was forced to issue its own Safety Warning due to the risk of severe injuries or deaths:

“The hazardous batteries can unexpectedly ignite and explode, posing a fire hazard to consumers, especially when the battery or the harness has been exposed to water and debris. CPSC is aware of 31 reports of fire, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500.”

The defective, dangerous batteries have Model RP-1304 and Model HL-RP-S1304. They were sold with most Rad Power e-bike models, including:

  • RadWagon 4
  • RadCity HS 4
  • RadRover High Step 5
  • RadCity Step Thru 3
  • RadRover Step Thru 1
  • RadRunner 2
  • RadRunner 1
  • RadRunner Plus
  • RadExpand 5

Lawsuit Filed by Many Who “Flew Over Handlebars” On RadRunner E-Bike

In September 2023, a lawsuit was filed against Rad Power Bikes by an attorney who said he “flew over the handlebars” when he crashed on a defective RadRunner e-bike.

The plaintiff, Gary M., blamed his crash on a dangerous braking system on the RadRunner, which includes a combination of mechanical disc brakes and a quick-release lever on the front wheel.

Upon braking, Mr. Mason was thrown over the handlebars – and saw the front wheel flying through the air. Mr. Mason landed on his back, resulting in five broken ribs and a broken clavicle.”

He was hospitalized for two nights and spent 6 weeks in recovery and rehabilitation, according to his lawsuit.

He claims that the hard braking can cause the front wheel to disengage from the RadRunner e-bike frame, causing “instability or wobbling and even complete dismantling of the bike.”

His RadRunner E-Bike Lawsuit was filed against Rad Power Bikes on September 15, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington (Seattle) — Case 2:23-cv-01446.

Lawsuit Filed After 12-Year-Old Girl Dies on RadRunner E-Bike Crash

In August 2022, the parents of a 12-year-old girl who died when her friend crashed a RadRunner e-bike filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Rad Power Bikes, blaming the crash on defective brakes.

The lawsuit claims that Rad Power Bikes manufactured a defective e-bike with a dangerous braking system. The e-bike began to “shake and wobble” at the bottom of a hill, causing the girls to crash.

The lawsuit was filed on August 1, 2022 in the Superior Court of the State of California (Los Angeles County) — Case Number 22STCV24714.

What is the Problem?

Lawsuits for injuries and deaths have been filed against Rad Power Bikes by people who claim that the braking system on RadRunner e-bikes is dangerously defective.

Lawsuits Claim RadRunner Braking System is Dangerous

These lawsuits claim that RadRunner e-bikes are defective because they use disc brakes in conjunction with a quick-release front wheel, which is a known safety hazard because hard braking may cause the front wheel to disengage, wobble, or detach from the e-bike.

What is the RadRunner E-Bike?

The RadRunner is an electric bicycle (“e-bike”) that is manufactured by Rad Power Bikes. It is advertised as an “electric utility bike” that is designed to carry both people and cargo like groceries or other items.

Types of RadRunner E-Bikes

  • RadRunner 1 (original)
  • RadRunner Plus
  • RadRunner 2
  • RadRunner 3 Plus

Why Is The Braking System Defective?

Rad Power Bikes designed all of their e-bikes with disc bakes and quick-release “skewers” to release the front wheel without the use of a tool. This is advertised as a way to make maintenance easier, but it may also pose a life-threatening safety hazard.

There are many complaints from riders who crashed after the front wheel fell off, wobbled, or became unstable while braking hard. Some lawsuits also claim that the front fork is dangerous because the front wheel can simply lift off the fork, which poses another crash hazard.
