Rad Power E-Bike Batteries Linked to Fires & Explosions

In November 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a Safety Warning for Rad Power E-Bike Batteries that can catch fire or explode, even when not in use.

What is the Risk?

This poses a risk of “serious injury or death,” as well as significant property damage. There were dozens of reports of fires.

Alarmingly, the CPSC said some fires occurred “when the battery was not charging, the product was not in use, and the product was in storage.”

What is the Problem?

Rad Power E-Bikes were sold with lithium-ion batteries that can catch on fire or explode. People should immediately stop using Rad Power E-Bike Batteries with Model Numbers RP-1304 and HL-RP-S1304.

According to the CPSC Safety Warning:

“The hazardous batteries can unexpectedly ignite and explode, posing a fire hazard to consumers, especially when the battery or the harness has been exposed to water and debris. CPSC is aware of 31 reports of fire, including 12 reports of property damage totaling approximately $734,500.”

What Should I Do?

Customers should immediately remove the battery from the Rad Power E-Bike and dispose of it following local hazardous waste procedures. Do not sell or give away the battery.

How To Identify Hazardous E-Bike Batteries

The defective, hazardous batteries have Model Numbers RP-1304 and HL-RP-S1304, which is on a label on the back of the battery.

These batteries were sold with the following Rad Power E-Bikes:

  • RadWagon 4
  • RadCity HS 4
  • RadRover High Step 5
  • RadCity Step Thru 3
  • RadRover Step Thru 1
  • RadRunner 2
  • RadRunner 1
  • RadRunner Plus
  • RadExpand 5

Where Were They Sold?

The defective batteries were sold on RadPowerBikes.com, Best Buy stores, and bike shops nationwide for about $550 (replacement batteries) or between $1,500 and $2,000 (when sold with e-bikes).

Can I Get a Refund or Replacement Battery?

No. Rad Power, a company based in Seattle, Washington, has refused to recall the defective batteries that can explode and cause deaths or severe injuries.

Rad Power also refused to provide customers with a replacement battery, because doing so “would immediately put Rad out of business, which would be of no benefit to our riders,” according to the CPSC Safety Warning published on November 24, 2025.
