PurSteam Steamer Recall
In February 2026, a New Jersey-based company called Aterian announced a recall for nearly 200,000 PurSteam® Clothing Steamers that were sold since December 2020 after at least 54 people reported burn injuries.
What is the Problem?
The recall involves about 75,400 PurSteam® Elite Travel Steamers (Model PS-510) and about 119,000 PurSteam® Mighty Lil Steamers (Model PS-550).
These products are supposed to heat up water in a reservoir and spray out a light mist of steam to freshen clothes and remove wrinkles. Instead, they may shoot out extremely hot water:
“The steamers can expel hot water from the steam nozzle during use, posing a serious burn hazard to consumers.”
How Many People Were Burned?
PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamers have been linked to at least 40 burn injuries, two of which were 2nd-degree burn injuries. PurSteam Elite Travel Steamers were linked to at least 14 reports of burn injuries.
What Happened?
Aterian purchased the PurSteam company in December 2020, so the recall only applies to products after that time. However, Aterian said it is aware of additional reports of injuries and incidents before then.
According to the recall:
- Between December 2020 and 2024, there were 80 reports of hot water being expelled from the PurSteam Elite Travel Steamer model PS-510, including 14 reports of burn injuries.
- Between December 2020 and 2024, there were 392 reports of hot water being expelled from the PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamer model PS-550, including 40 reports of burn injuries, two of which were reported as second-degree burns.
How To Identify PurSteam Steamers
The recall only includes steamers that were purchased after December 2020 or with one of the following date codes: 2310, 2308, 2305, 2304, 2303, 2212, 2211, 2210, 2203, 2112, 2111, 2110, 0221, 1019, and 4619.
The steamers can be identified by the following information:
- PurSteam® Elite Travel Steamers: White with a triangular-shaped opening for the steam vents. The name “PurSteam” is printed below the water reservoir window, and Model PS-510 is printed on the bottom of the product. They were sold from December 2020 through April 2025.
- PurSteam® Mighty Lil Steamers: White with an oblong-shaped opening for the steam vents. The name “PurSteam” is printed under the water window, and Model PS-550 is printed on the bottom of the product. They were sold from December 2020 through January 2025.
What Should I Do?
Customers should immediately stop using the recalled steamers and visit the recall website at https://recall.pursteam.com/ to register for a refund.
Clothing Steamer Recalls
This recall from PurSteam joins a growing list of recalls for clothing steamers, garment steamers, and portable travel steamers.
In recent years, millions of steamers have been recalled by a variety of manufacturers because they can leak, shoot out, or spray extremely hot water, which poses a risk of serious burn injuries.
More than 100 people have reported burn injuries from these steamers. Several people have suffered full-thickness 3rd-degree burns, which may result in scarring, disfigurement and disability, or require hospitalization and extensive treatment, including skin grafts.
