Kidney side effects like acute nephritis and chronic renal disease have been linked to heartburn drugs like Protonix. In severe cases, these side effects can lead to kidney failure.

UPDATE: Heartburn Drugs Increase Risk of Death
July 2017 — A new study in the journal BMJ Open has linked the long-term use of heartburn drugs in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs. Click here to read more.

What is Protonix?
Protonix (pantoprazole) treats symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn by reducing the amount of acid made in the stomach. It is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors (PPI).
Protonix and Kidney Problems
Evidence linking PPIs and kidney side effects has been growing since the 1990s. Protonix has been on the market since 2000 and it has been linked to a number of case reports of nephritis. In December 2013, the FDA updated the label to include warnings about sudden kidney inflammation (acute interstitial nephritis).
Studies Linking PPIs and Kidney Disease
Two recent studies have found evidence linking PPIs and kidney disease:
- JAMA Internal Medicine (February 2016): Twice-daily use of PPIs linked to a 46% increased risk of nephritis. Conclusions were based on data from 10,500 adults with arterial disease who started PPIs between 1996 and 2011.
- CMAJ Open (April 2015): Study involving 290,000 adults over 66 years old on Ontario found that those who used PPIs were 3-times as likely to develop nephritis and 2.5-times more likely to suffer an acute kidney injury.
Complications of Kidney Disease
The kidneys are responsible for cleaning the blood, balancing fluid levels, and other essential functions. When they stop working properly, complications can occur in many parts of the body. Many people develop high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, cardiovascular problems, and more.
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm in Texas. At this time, our trial lawyers are filing individual lawsuits rather than a Protonix class action. We are focusing on helping plaintiffs with the following kidney side effects:
- Acute interstitial nephritis
- Kidney failure
- Acute kidney injury
- Kidney inflammation
- Renal disease
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
About Class Actions
Class actions typically involve a large number of people with similar legal claims against one defendant. They are often filed after corporations defraud investors, sell defective products, or discriminate against employees. If compensation is awarded, everyone in the class action shares.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
Consumer class actions rarely go to trial and they are designed to maximize efficiency rather than compensation for individual plaintiffs. This approach can have disadvantages when individuals have very severe injuries, especially if lawyers charge massive fees or accept a “low-ball” settlement.
Our attorneys are filing individual lawsuits so we can focus on helping people with the worst injuries from Protonix. We specialize in holding drug-makers accountable for failing to warn about side effects. If you were injured, you could be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost income, and more.
