What is Protonix?

Protonix (pantoprazole) treats symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn by reducing the amount of acid made in the stomach. It is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors (PPI).

Protonix and Kidney Problems

Evidence linking PPIs and kidney side effects has been growing since the 1990s. Protonix has been on the market since 2000 and it has been linked to a number of case reports of nephritis. In December 2013, the FDA updated the label to include warnings about sudden kidney inflammation (acute interstitial nephritis).

Studies Linking PPIs and Kidney Disease

Two recent studies have found evidence linking PPIs and kidney disease:

• JAMA Internal Medicine (February 2016): Twice-daily use of PPIs linked to a 46% increased risk of nephritis. Conclusions were based on data from 10,500 adults with arterial disease who started PPIs between 1996 and 2011.
• CMAJ Open (April 2015): Study involving 290,000 adults over 66 years old on Ontario found that those who used PPIs were 3-times as likely to develop nephritis and 2.5-times more likely to suffer an acute kidney injury.

Complications of Kidney Disease

The kidneys are responsible for cleaning the blood, balancing fluid levels, and other essential functions. When they stop working properly, complications can occur in many parts of the body. Many people develop high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, cardiovascular problems, and more.
