Prevacid and Stomach Cancer
In November 2017, a study published in the journal Gut found a doubled (2X) higher risk of stomach cancer for people who were on long-term treatment with heartburn medications in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class, which includes popular antacids like Prevacid.
Heartburn Drugs Increase Risk of Death
July 2017 — A new study in the journal BMJ Open has linked the long-term use of heartburn drugs in the Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) class with up to a 50% increased risk of death compared to H2-blocker heartburn drugs. Click here to read more.

Prevacid and Nephritis
Prevacid (lansoprazole) is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) that decreases the amount of stomach acid to prevent heartburn and acid reflux. In 2004, a hospital in the United Kingdom reported two cases of acute interstitial nephritis (kidney inflammation due to hypersensitivity) associated with Prevacid — the first cases linked to the drug.
In one case, an elderly female was admitted to the hospital with non-specific symptoms after taking Prevacid for 45 days. She had a biopsy and was diagnosed with interstitial nephritis, but recovered after discontinuing Prevacid and taking anti-inflammatory corticosteroids.
Evidence linking PPIs and kidney problems has continued to grow. After dozens of cases of nephritis were reported, the FDA updated the label on Prevacid to include acute interstitial nephritis. In January 2016, researchers at Johns Hopkins University published a study linking once-daily and twice-daily doses of PPIs with a 20-50% increased risk of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Many people with this disease require long-term dialysis or treatment for kidney failure.
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm in Texas, but our trial lawyers are not currently filing a Prevacid class action. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits on behalf of people who developed severe side effects, such as:
- Acute Interstitial Nephritis
- Kidney inflammation
- Kidney damage
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
- End-stage renal failure
- Kidney failure
- Stomach cancer
About Class Actions
Class actions are designed to help a lot of people resolve similar legal claims all at once. Lawyers choose an individual to represent the entire class and use that person’s case to argue for compensation. If compensation is awarded, members of the class action share it equally.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action
The problem with class actions is that they are not designed to maximize compensation for individual plaintiffs with the most severe injuries. Members may also have to accept “low-ball” settlements or higher attorneys’ fees.
Our lawyers believe there is no excuse for pharmaceutical companies who fail to warn about side effects. We help victims file lawsuits and seek justice for their injuries. If you were injured by Prevacid, you could be entitled to compensation for your injury, medical expenses, and more.
