What is Cronobacter?
Cronobacter sakazakii is a type of bacteria that has been found in very dry foods, such as powdered milk, infant formula, herbs and spices, and starchy foods. It has also been found in sewer water, according to the CDC.
What is the Risk?
Cronobacter infections are not very common, but they can be very serious or deadly — especially for infants and people with vulnerable immune systems, such as adults undergoing HIV or cancer treatment.
The risk is that Cronobacter will spread beyond the digestive system and cause a life-threatening complication, such as a bloodstream infection (sepsis), meningitis, organ failure, or death.
Did Anyone Get Sick?
Lyons Magnus said no illnesses or deaths have been linked to Premier Protein or the other recalled shakes.
Symptoms to Watch Out For
The manufacturer of Premier Protein warned that “common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection.”
Deadly Cronobacter Outbreak Linked to Baby Formula
In February 2022, Abbott Nutrition recalled several types of powdered infant formula (Similac, Elecare and Alimentum) after several babies died of Cronobacter infections. This outbreak shows just how dangerous Cronobacter can be for infants and other people who have underlying health issues.
