A new study has found that Pradaxa (dabigatran) may increase a patient’s risk of a heart attack by 33% compared to other blood-thinning medications. This complication is very concerning because Pradaxa is supposed to reduce the risk of blood-clot complications.
The RE-LY clinical trial compared Pradaxa to a warfarin, the traditional medication of choice for people with atrial fibrillation. The RE-LY trial followed more than 18,000 people — some were given warfarin, some were given 150-mg of Pradaxa. The study found that the people taking Pradaxa were less likely to have a stroke or develop blood clots. The researchers also found that people taking Pradaxa were 38% more likely to have a heart attack.
In a post-hoc analysis of all Pradaxa studies, researchers took into account the RE-LY trial, and also seven other trials that studied Pradaxa used by people who had other illnesses. With a pool of more than 30,500 patients, the researchers found that the increased chance of having a heart attack was very small. But when they limited their pool to the people with atrial fibrillation, they found that the risk of heart attack was significant.
