Has My Porsche Been Recalled for ARC Airbags?

No. Porsche has not yet recalled any vehicles that were equipped with ARC airbag inflators. Even so, U.S. safety officials believe that around 52 million ARC airbags are dangerously defective.

These airbags have been linked to 2 deaths and 7 injuries in the U.S. and Canada since 2009, according to U.S. auto-safety officials.

Porsche and 11 other auto-makers installed these defective airbag inflators in millions of vehicles, but only a small fraction have been recalled. There is not yet a complete list of vehicles that contain ARC airbag inflators because a full recall has not been announced yet.

When Were These Airbags Manufactured?

The inflators were manufactured between 2000 and 2018 by ARC Automotive Inc. and Delphi Automotive Systems (under a licensing agreement with ARC).

In January 2018, ARC updated the manufacturing process to fix a problem that is linked to ruptures. No injuries or deaths have been linked to inflators that were manufactured after January 2018.

U.S. Safety Officials Demand Airbag Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) completed an 8-year safety investigation into ARC airbag inflators in early 2023. The agency asked ARC to voluntarily recall about 52 million airbag inflators after concluding that they were defective.

Unfortunately, ARC refused to issue a recall: “Specifically, ARC characterized the ruptures as ‘isolated events’ and ‘an inevitable part of any volume manufacturing process,” according to the NHTSA.

Manufacturing Problem Linked to Airbag Explosions

According to the NHTSA, the airbag inflators are defective because the metal canister can blow apart when the airbag is triggered. The NHTSA blamed these explosions on a manufacturing problem.

The manufacturing problem occurs when the inflator’s metal canister is being welded together. Sometimes, welding debris is left behind inside the canister. When the airbag is triggered, this debris clogs a hole for gases that are supposed to fill up the airbag.

Instead, trapped gases pressurize the canister and cause it to blow apart, ejecting broken pieces of sharp metal into the vehicle. According to the NHTSA investigation report:

“A blockage of sufficient size will cause an over pressurization and rupture of the inflator, leading to the potential forced propulsion of shrapnel or metal fragments from the inflator into the passenger compartment.”

What is the Problem?

Airbags inflators that explode instead of filling up the airbag pose life-threatening safety risks. Metal shrapnel can hit people in the face, neck, chest, or body, causing severe injuries that resemble gunshots or stab-wounds. Even if people in vehicle avoid being hit by metal, they will not be protected by the airbag because it will fail to inflate.

Safety Risks of Exploding Airbags

  • Bleeding to death
  • Lacerations to the face, neck, or body
  • Metal shrapnel injuries
  • Scarring
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Blindness
  • Injuries linked to airbag failing to deploy
  • Death
