Polaris Recalls 2015-2017 RZR 170 Vehicles

July 2017 — Polaris has issued a safety recall for all 16,800 of the 2015-2017 model-year RZR 170 off-road vehicles after 4 reports of fires when fuel leaked and hit an electrical wire. Last week, Polaris also recalled over 1,100 of the 2017 RZR 570 vehicles because the front brakes can fall off. Click here to read more.

Polaris RZR Recall Issued Due to Fire Hazard

April 19, 2016 — Polaris Industries and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have announced a recall for the Polaris RZR 900 and RZR 1000 recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs).

In October 2015, Polaris issued a more limited recall involving 53,000 RZR vehicles. Those vehicles are included in the current recall, which is the largest ever issued by Polaris. According to the notice:

“The vehicles’ fuel tank vent line can be misrouted, causing it to become pinched. This can cause the fuel tank to pressurize and leak fuel, posing a fire hazard.”

15 Year-Old Dies in Polaris RZR Fire in Rollover Accident

Polaris has received more than 160 reports of fires in the recalled RZR vehicles, resulting in 19 injuries and the death of a 15 year-old girl named Baylee Hoaldridge.

Hoaldridge was riding in an RZR that her family rented for the July 4th holiday in Juab County, Utah. Investigators say the vehicle tipped over after traveling too fast around a turn. The vehicle caught on fire and Hoaldridge suffered burns over 65% of her body.

Over the next four months, Hoaldridge endured 27 surgeries before being taken off life support in November 2015, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Her family is not pursuing a lawsuit against Polaris, but an attorney representing the family declined to say whether they had reached a settlement. He blamed her death on defective design, saying, “A machine like this should never catch fire just from tipping on its side.”
