$2.3 Million Settlement After PICC Line Causes Baby Brain Damage, Amputation
In June 2017, the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida paid a $2.3 million settlement to the parents of a premature baby boy who suffered brain damage and had to have his arm amputated after the hospital misplaced a PICC line and left it in for nearly a week, despite signs that the baby’s arm and hand were suffering from impeded blood-flow.
What is a PICC Line Catheter?
The Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) is a type of intravenous (IV) access that can be used for several weeks or months, which is a much longer period of time than a traditional IV.
Why Do Patients Need PICC Lines?
Doctors use PICC line catheters when they need repeated access to the large central veins near the patient’s heart. The catheter is a long, flexible tube that is inserted into the veins in the patient’s arm (usually just above the elbow) and threaded into the large veins of the heart.
PICC Line Catheters are used to deliver medications or fluids, take blood samples, nutrition, and more. They are commonly used in cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, or people who need long-term treatment with antibiotics or anti-fungal medications.
PICC Line Catheter Misplacement
PICC Line Catheters must be placed into the correct vein, or they could accidentally deliver a dangerous amount of fluid and nutrition to the wrong part of the body, such as the patient’s brain. Lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured or died when a PICC Line Catheter was accidentally placed into the carotid artery instead of the jugular vein, resulting in a stroke, permanent brain damage, or death.
PICC Line Catheter Infections & Amputations
PICC Line Catheters are associated with complications involving blood clots (thrombosis) and bloodstream infections. It is essential that healthcare professionals recognize the symptoms of a blood clot or an infection and remove the PICC line before it causes tissue damage, brain damage, or other complications that lead to a limb amputation.

$900,000 Settlement in PICC Line Catheter Death Lawsuit
In December 2023, a $900,000 settlement was paid to the family of a 27-year-old man who died after a PICC Line Catheter was misplaced at the Regional Medical Center (RMC) in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
According to the lawsuit, he went to the hospital in November 2017 suffering from nausea and abdominal pain. Doctors diagnosed him with diabetic ketoacidosis and directed nurses to put a PICC line catheter into his external jugular vein. Instead, after multiple unsuccessful attempts, the PICC line catheter was misplaced into an artery. Doctors did not diagnose the error, which caused him to suffer strokes, paralysis, seizures, a heart attack, and ultimately death.
