Peeled Garlic Recalled for Botulism Risk

In April 2026, Tops Friendly Markets recalled all codes of Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic and Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum.

The issue was discovered during a routine store inspection that found the products had not been held at sufficient temperatures to control the botulism hazard.

The recall covers products distributed through Tops Markets locations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. No illnesses have been reported as of the recall announcement. The recall was issued with the knowledge of the FDA.

Which Products Are Recalled?

  • Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic — 6 oz., plastic bag, UPC 74574-10852, all product code dates
  • Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic — 6 oz., plastic bag, UPCs 71894-00000 and 68826-75340, all product code dates

What Is the Botulism Risk?

Clostridium botulinum is a bacterium that produces a toxin causing botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. According to the recall announcement, symptoms may include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, and trouble speaking or swallowing. Difficulty breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension, and constipation may also occur.

The recall announcement states that Clostridium botulinum “can cause life threatening illness or death.” Importantly, consumers are warned not to eat the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled — botulism contamination is not always detectable by sight or smell.

What Should You Do?

Customers who purchased either recalled product should return it to any Tops Markets location for a full refund. For questions, Tops Consumer Affairs can be reached at 1-800-522-2522. For updates, visit the FDA recall page.

Botulism is one of the most serious forms of foodborne illness. Even a small amount of the toxin can cause paralysis, respiratory failure, and death. When a retailer fails to store food at proper temperatures and that failure creates a botulism risk, injured consumers may have legal options against the retailer and others in the supply chain.

While this recall primarily covers Tops Markets locations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, Christopher Ranch is a nationally distributed brand. If you purchased recalled peeled garlic and developed botulism symptoms, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages regardless of where you live.
