Recalls Expand After More Pasta Tests Positive for Listeria

Nate’s Fine Foods manufactures pre-cooked pasta ingredients that were used by other companies (such as FreshRealm and ) in prepared meals and deli items sold at Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, and other stores.

This led to a cascade of additional recalls, including (but not limited to) specific sell-by dates of products such as:

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive on foods that are refrigerated and frozen. The infection is relatively rare compared to other types of food poisoning microbes, but often more serious — especially for elderly adults, pregnant women, and people with vulnerable immune systems.

What is the Risk?

High-risk individuals are more likely to suffer an invasive infection, which is a life-threatening or deadly complication that can occur when Listeria spreads beyond the digestive system to other parts of the body, such as the brain, spinal cord, or bloodstream.

Some of the most life-threatening health risks include meningitis and sepsis. Pregnant women may only suffer a mild flu-like illness, but suffer a fetal loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn baby.
