Salmonella Food Poisoning Outbreak at Pasha Mediterranean Grill
September 2018 — At least 225 people developed Salmonella food poisoning, including 12 people who were hospitalized, after eating at the Pasha Mediterranean Grill restaurant located at 9339 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78240.
What Caused the Outbreak?
Hummus is suspected to be the source of the outbreak, according to the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department and Kamran Vandi, co-owner of Pasha Mediterranean Grill. The first reports of illnesses started around Labor Day Weekend in August and September 2018.
1st Lawsuit Filed in Pasha Food Poisoning Outbreak
Samuel Manago, a Navy veteran who was hospitalized with severe food poisoning, filed the first lawsuit against Pasha Mediterranean Grill. He is seeking compensation for his illness that began after he ate “beef shawarma” at Pasha on August 31, according to the lawsuit.
Findings of the Health Department Inspections
On September 3, health officials inspected Pasha Mediterranean Grill and identified at least 2 employees who had fever or diarrhea in the week before the outbreak. One of the sick employees was sent home. Inspectors also observed food not being held at proper temperatures, employees failing to change gloves or wash hands between tasks.
