What is Ozurdex?
Ozurdex® is a tiny implant that is injected inside the eye, where it releases an anti-inflammatory medication for the treatment of swelling and inflammation due to diseases like macular edema and uveitis.
What is the Problem?
The problem is that Ozurdex has been linked to case reports of the implant migrating out of position. In these reports, Ozurdex moved into a part of the eye called the “anterior chamber,” which is located behind the cornea. Some patients also developed severe corneal damage, or needed another surgery.
Ozurdex Migration & Corneal Damage
Ozurdex migration and corneal damage are severe complications. Patients who develop these eye injuries may need another surgery to remove Ozurdex, or try to move it back into the proper position. If the patient has suffered severe corneal damage, doctors may need to remove Ozurdex and also do a corneal transplant to restore vision.
Ozurdex Side Effects & Safety Risks
Some of the most serious eye injuries linked to Ozurdex include:
- Migration
- Ozurdex implant moves out of position
- Vision loss
- Blindness
- Needing another surgery
- Surgery to remove or reposition Ozurdex implant
- Cornea transplant surgery
- Cornea damage (also known as: corneal degradation, corneal degeneration, corneal decompensation)
- Corneal edema
- Cornea epithelial cell damage
- Corneal lesions
- And more
Case Reports of Ozurdex Migration & Corneal Damage
Doctors have published multiple case reports of patients who were injured or needed surgery when an Ozurdex implant migrated out of position. Some reports describe techniques for doctors to remove Ozurdex or reposition it. Other case reports describe corneal damage.
For example, this study from February 2025 warned that Ozurdex “use is associated with significant risks, particularly unexpected and severe complications such as corneal decompensation.” (Zhao 2025)
The authors also noted that the label on Ozurdex does not include some injuries: “Corneal decompensation, Choroidal hematoma, and Posterior capsule rupture, which were not listed on the drug label.”
Here are some examples of case reports linking Ozurdex and migration:
- Depla, 2022 – Active Removal of anterior-segment-migrated dexamethasaone implant (Ozurdex) — GMS Opthalmology Cases 2022, Vol. 12, 2193-1496.
- Kayikcioglu 2020 – Anterior Chamber Migration of Ozurdex Implants. — Turk J Opthamolmol. 2020; 50:115-122.
- Majumder 2018 – Anterior chamber migration of a sustained-release dexamethasone intravitreal implant: A case report and review of the literature. — Oman J. Opthamol. 2019; 12:133-7.

How Does Ozurdex Work?
Ozurdex® is a tiny rod-shaped implant that is injected directly into the eye, where it slowly releases 700 μg of an anti-inflammatory medication called dexamethasone, and then dissolves naturally.
Ozurdex is also called a “dexamethasone intravitreal implant.” It is a medical device that is manufactured by the company Allergan. Ozurdex was FDA approved in 2009 to treat swelling due to macular edema.
In recent years, the FDA has expanded approval of Ozurdex to include Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) and an inflammatory eye disease called uveitis. All of these eye diseases can cause severe vision loss if they are left untreated.
Ozurdex Lawsuits
Our law firm is investigating cases for people who were injured by Ozurdex implants that moved out of position, migrated, damaged the cornea, caused other severe eye injuries, or you needed surgery.
If you were injured by Ozurdex, we can evaluate your case and let you know if you might qualify to file a lawsuit.
How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help?
Lawsuits for defective medical devices are typically filed against the manufacturer. These lawsuits will seek justice and financial compensation for the patient’s injuries, medical bills, long-term health problems (such as vision loss), lost income, and other damages.
