What is the Problem?

Overhead garage storage racks are typically industrial-strength steel racks that are mounted to the ceiling in a garage. Many are height-adjustable so that the rack can be lowered and raised to access items.

Larger racks are advertised to hold hundreds of pounds in weight — for example, up to 600 pounds can be stored on a 4′ by 8′ SafeRacks Overhead Garage Storage Rack, according to the manufacturer.

Overhead garage storage racks that fall from the ceiling can cause severe, life-threatening injuries or death to anyone standing below or nearby. People can be injured or killed by the steel rack itself, but also falling boxes and other items that were stored on the rack.

Overhead Garage Storage Rack Recalls

Recalls have been issued for overhead garage storage racks under the following brands:

Fleximounts Overhead Garage Storage Rack Recall

In June 2022, Loctek Inc. recalled about 17,500 Fleximounts® Overhead Garage Storage Racks because they can fall from the ceiling and cause injuries or death to people below.

The problem is that “the recalled overhead garage storage racks pose a possible risk of impact injury hazard as a result of the U-shaped buckle loosening,” according to the recall notice.

There were reports of at least 18 racks falling from the ceiling as a result of the U-shaped buckles on the supporting cables failing.

The recalled racks have model number GL44B and they were distributed from October 2020 through April 2022. They were sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and many online retailers.

Monsterrax / SafeRacks Overhead Garage Storage Rack Recalls

In April 2022, Eagle Industrial Group recalled about 12,800 SafeRacks / Monsterrax Overhead Garage Storage Racks due to an injury hazard.

There were 55 reports of the racks falling, including 1 person who was bruised and cut on their face by the corners of a ceiling-mounted rack that fell.

The problem is that the “hex bolts in the overhead garage storage racks can be defective, causing the rack to collapse from the ceiling, posing an impact injury hazard,” according to the recall notice.

They were sold from September 2021 through December 2021 online at Costco.com, amazon.com, saferacks.com, monsterrax.com and other websites for about $140.
