What is Onglyza?

Onglyza (saxagliptin) is a type-2 diabetes treatment made by AstraZeneca. It belongs to a class of drugs known as “incretin mimetics,” which help control blood-sugar levels by mimicking hormones called incretins that tell the pancreas to make more insulin.

FDA Evaluating Rhabdomyolysis Risk

The FDA is evaluating a potential signals of a serious risk and new safety information linking DPP4 diabetes drugs and rhabdomyolysis. This potentially life-threatening kidney side effect was identified by the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) between April and June 2017.

Onglyza and Pancreatic Cancer

The problem with Onglyza is that it has been linked to reports of pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation). Over time, chronic pancreatitis can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

In March 2013, a study published in Diabetes linked incretin mimetic drugs to pre-cancerous cell growths in the pancreas. Soon after this study was published, the FDA issued a Safety Communication and said they would investigate the link between Onglyza and pancreatic cancer.

Onglyza and Heart Failure

In February 2014, Onglyza was linked to a 27% increased risk of heart failure in a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine. The FDA opened an investigation, and about a year later, concluded that the label should be updated to include warnings about an increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure.

What is the problem?

The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm in Texas. However, our attorneys are not currently filing an Onglyza class action against AstraZeneca. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits for people who were injured by severe, life-threatening side effects of Onglyza.

About Class Actions

Class actions can have major disadvantages for people with very serious injuries. In most class actions, thousands of people with less-serious injuries are represented by a “class representative.” The outcome of the lawsuit depends on that one person, and any compensation is divided among everyone in the lawsuit.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Members of class actions may have to accept a “low-ball” settlement, high attorneys’ fees, and feel like their case didn’t get the attention it deserved. Our attorneys file individual lawsuits because we believe everyone who was seriously injured by Onglyza deserves a lawyer who is committed to their case.

Our lawyers specialize in helping victims of defective drugs seek financial compensation for their injures. We believe there is no excuse for drug-makers who sell defective medications without warning about potential risks. If you or a loved one had heart failure or cancer after taking Onglyza, we may be able to help.
