Old Spice Mesothelioma Lawsuit Ends in $4.8 Million Jury Award

On April 15, 2021, a man who was diagnosed with mesothelioma was awarded $4.8 million by a jury in Los Angeles, California.

The man, Willie M. Jr., blamed his cancer on his 22-year daily habit of using Old Spice® Talcum Powder that contained toxic asbestos.

He was specifically diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma in 2017, which is a type of lung cancer that is strongly associated with exposure to asbestos. He filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles in 2018.

The lawsuit accused talc supplier Whittaker Clark & Daniels of negligence for selling talcum powder from a mine in North Carolina that was contaminated by asbestos.

According to the plaintiff, he was exposed to asbestos by breathing in tiny particles of talcum powder every time he used Old Spice talc.

The jury found Whittaker Clark & Daniels 42% responsible for his injuries. Other companies were also found partly to blame, including Shulton Inc., the company that made Old Spice Talcum Powder.

The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of the State of California, Los Angeles County — Case No. BC698965.
