OCOOPA Linked to Hand Warmer Fires and One Death

In July 2026, Shenzhen Street Cat Technology, doing business as OCOOPA Direct, and the CPSC announced a recall of about 1.5 million OCOOPA-brand rechargeable hand warmers.

OCOOPA Direct told the CPSC it had received 1,480 reports of the hand warmers overheating, which were linked to 15 fires and 350 burn injuries. One of those incidents was connected to the death of an 83-year-old consumer in San Diego, California, in February 2026.

What Is the Fire and Burn Danger?

The hand warmers run on a built-in lithium-ion battery charged through a USB-C port. Lithium-ion batteries can enter a state called thermal runaway if they overheat, short-circuit, or are otherwise damaged, and once that starts, the battery can ignite within moments.

A hand warmer is meant to be pressed against skin or carried in a pocket for warmth, which gives someone very little time to react if the battery starts to fail.

The model number and a three-digit batch number are printed on the underside of each hand warmer, with “OCOOPA” printed on the top of the device and on its packaging.

Where Were They Sold?

The hand warmers were sold nationwide, including in Texas, at Amazon.com, Ocoopa.com, Ocoopa.net, and Walmart.com from September 2018 through May 2026, for between $15 and $60. If you still have one of the recalled models, stop using it and follow the instructions on OCOOPA’s recall page.
