NutriBullet Explosion & Burn Injuries
Homeland Housewares, the manufacturer of the NutriBullet blender, is facing lawsuits from at least 22 people who suffered severe burns, cuts, lacerations, and other injuries when their NutriBullet exploded.
Nutribullet Class Action Lawsuit
In June 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed in California, claiming that the NutriBullet blender can explode without warning. Lawyers say the NutriBullet is defective because the canister can pressurize, detach, and explode scalding-hot liquids. Many people who were injured say the followed all of the instructions and were blending cold foods when their NutriBullet exploded without warning, possibly because heat from the spinning blades pressurized the canister.
Who Filed the NutriBullet Lawsuit?
The class action was filed by a woman from South Carolina who suffered 2nd-degree and 1st degree burns that cost $6,000 in medical treatment. She claims that her NutriBullet 900 Series exploded when she was blending water, walnuts, sea moss and cinnamon for 60 seconds.
NutriBullet Injury Lawsuits
One of the most recent lawsuits was filed by Rosa Rivera, the mother of the late Latin singer Jenni Rivera. She suffered 2nd-degree burns and had to be hospitalized when her NutriBullet blender blew up.
Another lawsuit was filed by Sheryl Utal, a woman who used her NutriBullet to make smoothies — until it exploded and caused 2nd-degree burns to her arms, chest, and face. She said:
“It just came flying out all over me, all over the kitchen, the ceilings, the walls. And it was on my chest. It also had hit me in the face as well.”
What is the problem?
NutriBullet is one of the most powerful blenders for its size. There is a 600-watt motor and razor-sharp blades that pulverize food into smoothies and blended-up liquid.
The problem is that blending up food can also cause the food to get extremely hot. This can cause pressure to build up in the canister, resulting in an explosion. There are also reports of NutriBullets exploding hot food and sticky liquids when the canister unthreaded itself from the base of the blender.
Magic Bullet Blender Lawsuits
Homeland Housewares also manufactures the Magic Bullet, another blender with a very similar design as the NutriBullet. The company was previously hit with lawsuits from people who experienced similar injuries when their Magic Bullet exploded or opened spontaneously.
Lawyers accuse Homeland Housewares of failing to fix design flaws, failing to warn consumers about the potential risks, and knowingly selling a dangerously defective kitchen appliance.
According to lawyers for Pete Damiano, a man who was nearly blinded and suffered cuts to his face when a NutriBullet exploded:
“The company is aware of the problem and, in fact, we have brought a prior lawsuit against a common manufacturer based on the Magic Bullet’s similar design defect.”
NutriBullet Adds Stronger Warning Labels
Homeland Housewares recently strengthened the warning labels on NutriBullet to better inform users about how to use it safely. Some of these warnings include: “Do not operate continuously for more than one minute” and “NEVER blend warm, hot or carbonated ingredients.”
The instruction manual also tells users not to blend hot ingredients in their NutriBullet because it could create internal pressure in the canister, which could potentially result in an explosion or burn injuries.
