On December 30, 2023, Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition recalled more than 657,000 cans of Enfamil Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Powder due to a risk of deadly infections with Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria.
What Cans of Baby Formula Were Recalled?
The recalled batches of Enfamil Nutramigen Baby Formula include: ZL3FRW, ZL3FPE, ZL3FXJ, ZL3FQD, ZL3FMH, ZL3FHG with a UPC code of 300871239418 or 300871239456 and “Use-By Date” of “1 Jan 2025.” These batches include certain 12.6-oz. and 19.8-oz. cans.
When Were They Sold?
The recall involves cans of Nutramigen Baby Formula that were manufactured in June 2023 and distributed primarily in June, July, and August 2023. Based on the low remaining stock, the manufacturer said it is likely that “much, if not all, of the products recalled in the United States have been consumed.”
Did Anyone Get Sick?
No illnesses were reported. Instead, the recall was issued after a batch of Nutramigen that was made at a facility in Michigan tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii by Israeli health officials.
In the U.S., the FDA tested the facility in Michigan, and also samples from the batch of Nutramigen that was tested in Israel, but did not find contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii. The FDA still recommended a recall, and Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition agreed.

Babies who consume formula that contains Cronobacter sakazakii can develop severe, life-threatening infections. The risk of infection is highest for babies who are premature or suffering from underlying health issues.
Infections with Cronobacter can cause complications like sepsis (blood poisoning), meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord), and an intestinal infection called Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC).
The symptoms of an infection with Cronobacter sakazakii may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, and abnormal movements.
