ISMP Warning: Nuplazid Side Effects May Include Hallucinations, Worsening of Parkinson’s Symptoms

In November 2017, the ISMP warned that Nuplazid had been linked to 2,236 reports of serious adverse events during its first year on the market. Of these events, 487 involved hallucinations. The researchers warned that Nuplazid may be ineffective at treating hallucinations, and it might worsen the problem or cause more serious side effects.

What is Nuplazid?

Nuplazid (pimavanserin) is an antipsychotic drug made by Acadia Pharmaceuticals that was approved by the FDA in April 2016. It is prescribed to some patients with Parkinson’s disease to reduce hallucinations and psychosis.

Nuplazid Side Effects

The most severe reported side effects of Nuplazid include:

  • Hallucinations
  • Confusion
  • Ineffective treatment of psychosis
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • Muscle injury
  • Weight loss
  • Falls
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Death

What is the Risk?

Studies of Nuplazid showed that 8.1% of patients experienced severe side effects, compared to 4.8% of patients on a placebo. The FDA estimated that 1 patient would experience a severe side effect for every 2 patients who were “much improved” as a result of Nuplazid.

Hundreds of Deaths Linked to Nuplazid

FDA data shows more than 700 deaths linked to Nuplazid — and in more than 500 deaths, Nuplazid is suspected to have contributed to the death. There are also hundreds of reports suggesting that Nuplazid “not providing the expected benefit” or potentially worsening the condition, according to the ISMP.

Nuplazid Hallucinations

Hallucinations are a symptom of Parkinson’s disease. Patients on Nuplazid may also experience hallucinations, in which they see or hear things that do not exist. The patient may not realize that they are hallucinating.
