Novaform Mattresses Recalled for Mold Hazards
In September 2023, FXI recalled around 48,000 Novaform ComfortGrande and DreamAway mattresses that were sold only at Costco after hundreds of complaints of mold growing on the mattress.
What Happened?
FXI issued the recall after 541 consumers said they found mold on the mattresses. The company believes that the recalled Novaform mattresses may have been exposed to water during manufacturing at a facility in San Bernadino, California, from January to April 2023.
The company warned that “these mattresses may be damp or may have developed mold after being packaged for shipment.”
Was My Mattress Recalled?
The recall only includes certain Novaform ComfortGrande 14-inch and Novaform DreamAway 8-inch Mattresses.
These mattresses were sold from January 2023 through June 2023, exclusively at Costco stores Northwest United States and in the San Francisco Bay, and online at www.Costco.com.
What is the Risk?
No adverse events were reported, but people who use a moldy mattress could develop allergic reactions, worsening allergies or other pre-existing lung problems, infections, skin rashes, and more.
FXI warned that mold growing on the mattresses poses “a health risk to individuals with compromised immune systems, damaged lungs or an allergy to mold.”
What Does a Moldy Mattress Look Like?
Mold can grow inside a foam mattress as well as on the surface. FXI shared photos of mold growth on the recall website at https://novaformcomfort.com/pages/recall, showing dark discolored spots on the surface and sides of a recalled Novaform mattress.
Signs & Symptoms of a Moldy Mattress
People who use a moldy mattress could develop health problems, such as:
- Coughing or wheezing
- Allergies
- Worsening allergies after using the mattress
- Congestion
- Runny nose
- A cold that doesn’t go away
- Itchy or watery eyes, blurry vision
- Skin rash
- Hospitalization
