Nissan Recalls 203,000 Trucks After 4 People Injured in Rollaway Accidents
In September 2022, Nissan expanded a recall to include 203,223 Titan and Frontier pickup trucks from the 2020-2023 model-years because the vehicles can roll away when the driver shifts into “Park.”
At least 4 people were injured in rollaway accidents. Nissan is warning drivers to always apply the parking brake when parking until the issue is fixed.
Nissan Truck Recalls
- June 24, 2022 — The original rollaway recall involved about 180,176 of the 2020-2022 Frontier and Titan pickup trucks with 9-speed transmissions
- September 7, 2022 — The expanded rollaway recall included more trucks from the 2023 model-year, including a total of 203,223 Frontier and Titan pickup trucks.
What is the Problem?
The rollaway problem is linked to a defective parking pawl, which is a part in the transmission that locks the truck in place when “Park” is selected. The parking pawl is getting caught on other components in the gearbox, which may prevent it from actually engaging.
What is the Risk?
If the parking pawl does not engage, the truck can roll away after the driver shifts into “Park.” If the customer does not use the parking brake, the truck can roll away and cause serious injuries or a crash.
Nissan Investigation Estimates that 10% of Trucks May Pose Rollaway Risk
Nissan also said that at least one truck in a factory holding lot rolled away when parked. Nissan conducted a plant audit in August and found that more than 10% of trucks that were examined (11 out of 83) had a defective parking pawl that poses a rollaway risk. Nissan put a hold on pickups leaving the factory until a repair can be implemented.
Rollaway accidents involving pickup trucks can cause severe injuries, deaths, and crashes with other cars and innocent bystanders. When the truck starts moving, anyone unlucky enough to be caught in the path of the vehicle can be pulled under the tires or crushed up against another object. If the truck rolls into oncoming traffic, it can cause a deadly crash, or property damage to other vehicles in a parking lot.
