Nestlé Infant Formula Recall

In January 2026, Nestlé announced one of the largest infant formula recalls in the company’s history due to a risk of contamination with a bacterial toxin called cereulide.

Along with formula products made by Lactalis and Danone, the recalls affected over 800 infant formula products that were distributed to at least 60 countries on 5 continents.

What Happened?

Health officials are warning parents and caregivers that the infant formula may be contaminated with cereulide, a toxin that is produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Did Any Babies Get Sick?

There are dozens of reports of babies who got sick after consuming infant formula that was recalled for cereulide, but it is very difficult to confirm that a baby’s illness was actually caused by cereulide.

This is because the toxin causes vomiting and diarrhea within just a few hours. It is usually cleared from the body within 24 hours. Doctors are also not required to test for cereulide.

Health officials in Belgium are investigating around 20 reports of babies who got sick after consuming the recalled infant formula. There are also a few reports of babies who were found to have traces of cereulide in their stool.

According to Nestlé: “Although no confirmed cases of product-related illness have been identified, we understand that the situation may raise concerns among parents. We take any concerns seriously and are monitoring the situation closely.”

What is Cereulide?

Cereulide is better known as the toxin that causes an illness called “fried rice syndrome,” which can occur when cooked rice is left out at room temperature for too long, allowing B. cereus spores to germinate, grow, and produce toxins that contaminate the food.

Symptoms of Cereulide Poisoning in Infants

The symptoms of cereulide poisoning in babies usually start quickly, within 30 minutes to 6 hours after the baby drinks the contaminated formula.

The illness usually resolves within 24 hours without needing medical treatment, but in infants, the illness can be more serious. The symptoms can include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Stomach cramps
  • Infants may be unwilling to eat

How Was the Problem Discovered?

Nestlé first discovered problems with cereulide during routine testing at a plant in the Netherlands at the end of November 2025. The company confirmed the results in December 2025, and announced a voluntary recall on December 10, 2025.

Cereulide Contamination Linked to ARA Oil

Further testing identified cereulide in a contaminated ingredient called arachidonic acid (ARA) oil. This ingredient was produced by a single Chinese supplier — Cabio Biotech in Wuhan, China — through a fungal fermentation process.

ARA oil is a fatty acid that occurs naturally in human breastmilk. The ingredient is manufactured and added to infant formula (along with docosahexaenoid acid or DHA) to make infant formula more closely resemble breastmilk. It is advertised to support infant development.

What Types of Infant Formula Were Recalled?

Nestlé is one of the top infant formula manufacturers in the world, and the recalls affect a variety of products with expiration dates ranging from October 2026 through November 2027. For example:

  • SMA (United Kingdom, Ireland)
  • BEBA (Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Vietnam)
  • NAN (Sold in many countries)
  • ALFAMINO (Sold in many countries)
  • Guigoz (France, Switzerland)
  • Lactogen (Sold in many countries)
  • Nidal (Middle East, North Africa)
  • Nestlé Advanced Nutrition (Sold in many countries)
  • And more

The recalls also involve infant formula products sold by Lactalis and Danone.

What Should I Do?

Parents should look at the brand-name, batch or lot number, and expiration dates, and compare them with the recall notices that have been issued in your home country.

As the recalls continue to expand, parents and caregivers should look for new updates from health officials.

Do not use any products that may be contaminated, even if it looks and smells normal. Cereulide is extremely resistant to heat and is not destroyed by boiling. Even a properly-prepared bottle of infant formula may still be contaminated with cereulide and make a baby sick.

Nestlé is urging parents to contact a healthcare provider if a child consumed the recalled infant formula and experience symptoms of cereulide poisoning.
