Nara Organics Linked to Infant Botulism Outbreak

In June 2026, Nara Organics voluntarily recalled all lots of its Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula due to a risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism. The FDA said it recommended the recall due to the severity of the illnesses and the epidemiological signal.

How Many Babies Got Botulism?

The FDA and CDC reported 3 cases of infant botulism in babies from California, Washington, and Pennsylvania who consumed Nara Organics Infant Formula. All 3 infants were hospitalized and recovered after being treated with the botulism antidote BabyBIG. The illnesses started on dates ranging from April through May 2026. No deaths have been reported.

Has The Botulism Toxin Been Found in Nara Baby Formula?

No. As of June 16, 2026, Nara formula has NOT tested positive for C. botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism. Instead, Nara Organics said it recalled all of its products out of an abundance of caution while testing continues. State officials have collected leftover formula for testing, with results expected in the coming weeks.

According to a statement on Nara Organics’ website:

“We believe in taking the strongest possible measure to protect the safety of babies. That’s why we quickly decided, in an abundance of caution, to voluntarily recall all Nara Organics infant formula currently available in the U.S.”

What Is the Botulism Risk?

Infant botulism is a rare but potentially deadly illness. It occurs when Clostridium botulinum spores are ingested and colonize an infant’s immature gut, where they produce one of the most powerful neurotoxins that is known to exist. Left untreated, botulism can cause paralysis and death.

The FDA notice describes the following signs and symptoms in affected infants:

  • Constipation
  • Poor feeding
  • Ptosis (drooping eyelid)
  • Sluggish pupils
  • Low muscle tone
  • Difficulty sucking and swallowing
  • Weak or altered cry
  • Generalized weakness
  • Respiratory difficulty, and possibly respiratory arrest

The symptoms of infant botulism can take several weeks to develop after a baby consumes a contaminated batch of infant formula. Parents who used Nara formula are encouraged to be vigilant for symptoms, and seek immediate medical attention for babies who get sick.

Which Products Are Affected?

The recall covers all lots of Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula in two can sizes:

  • Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula, 700g, UPC 860013251901
  • Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula, 400g, UPC 860013251918

The lot code is printed on the bottom of each can. The 3 infants in this outbreak were exposed to lots 709125280E14F2, 709125288E14F2, and 708125174E14F2, but the recall covers all lots on the market.

Where Were They Sold?

Nara Organics formula was distributed nationwide at Target retail stores, Target.com, and Nara.com between July 2025 and June 2026. The 700g cans were sold at Target, while Target did not sell the 400g cans. The formula was manufactured in Europe.

With Target stores across Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and beyond, and Nara.com shipping nationwide, many Texas families may have purchased this formula. If you have these products at home, the FDA recommends that you stop using it and either return it or request a refund. For updates, visit the FDA outbreak investigation page.

How Do I Get a Refund for Nara Formula?

Nara says it will automatically refund customers who ordered from its website in May or June 2026, with funds returned in 10 to 15 days. Customers whose last order was before May 2026 can photograph the bottom of each can and submit a refund request form.

Customers who bought 700g cans at Target can return the product to a Target store or follow Target’s online return instructions. More details are available on Nara’s recall page.

How Many Babies in Texas Were Affected?

No Texas cases have been confirmed in this outbreak as of June 2026. However, infant botulism is extremely rare and uncommon for doctors to diagnose. Furthermore, the official case-counts can sometimes under-represent the actual number of cases.

Previous Infant Formula Botulism Recall: ByHeart

The Nara recall is the second major recall for infant formula that has been linked to botulism in recent months. In November 2025, ByHeart recalled all batches of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula in connection with a multistate outbreak of infant botulism.

In that outbreak, Clostridium botulinum was later identified in some samples of ByHeart’s formula, and the case count grew to dozens of hospitalized infants across more than a dozen states. The back-to-back recalls have raised serious concerns about how a deadly bacteria is contaminating infant formula.

Legal Help for Texas Families

When an infant formula is linked to a dangerous bacterium like Clostridium botulinum, the consequences can be devastating, especially for newborns. Every one of the infants in this outbreak required hospitalization.

Texas families whose babies got sick with botulism after using this formula may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, hospitalization costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. A Texas product liability lawyer can help you understand your legal options.
